Gunn Carpentry is a Boston frame-to-finish carpentry outfit run by Adrian Gunn, working South Boston-area homes on decks, porches, stairs and interior trim — the kind of jobs where getting the underlying structure right matters as much as the finish work. Both of Gunn's professional credentials check out: Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration under Gunn Carpentry Inc is active, and Adrian Gunn's construction supervisor license is active as well. The reviews line up around one theme — customers keep hiring him again. One homeowner brought him back four or five times over three years, for everything from fixing another contractor's botched deck work to interior water damage repair and a pantry and closet build. Another describes a nearly 200-year-old building with an out-of-level frame that his crew blended new work into without it showing. The recurring job type is porch and deck restoration on older homes, where the real work often starts once the old decking comes off. On one 100-year-old porch, pulling up the decking revealed joists and beams in bad shape underneath — he replaced them at what the homeowner called a reasonable added cost rather than a surprise change order. A stair rebuild told a similar story: split pine treads, a loose banister, and a split newel post, fixed with an accurate time estimate and room to adjust the scope midway through. On Angi, Gunn Carpentry holds a 5.0 rating across ten ratings and seven shown projects, and Google shows the same pattern at 5 stars from six reviews — small numbers, but a matching, specific set of former clients doing the talking rather than a scattered mix of one-line ratings. There isn't much here to flag. No pricing complaints, no scheduling gripes, and no gap between what Angi lists (carpentry, framing, trim, decks, siding, stairs) and what the reviews actually describe. Nothing in the record covers larger whole-room remodels — the bathroom work mentioned in one review reads more like a piece of a bigger job than a documented specialty. For a deck rebuild, a stair repair, or matching new carpentry into an old house without it looking patched, Gunn Carpentry's own customers are the clearest evidence: more than one review here started with a straightforward-looking job that turned out to need structural repair once the old material came off, so ask what's underneath before assuming the scope is small.
I can’t recommend Adrian and his crew at Gunn Carpentry highly enough. I’ve hired them 4–5 times over the past three years, and every single experience has been exceptional. Their work has ranged from correcting poorly done work on my deck and decking, to repairing interior water damage, fixing a doorway and door frame, replacing a door, and most recently installing a pantry and master closet. The quality of their work is consistently clean, beautiful, and extremely well done. What really sets Adrian and his crew apart, though, is their professionalism and attention to detail. They communicate, show up exactly when they say they will, work efficiently, and take tremendous pride in their work. It’s clear that they care not just about getting the job done, but about doing it the right way. That attention to detail extends beyond the actual carpentry. They bring a Swiffer to clean up after themselves, and they leave the house just as clean as they found it. I’ve even seen Adrian take note of things in my hallway that they needed to move so they could put everything back exactly where it was. Those little things may seem minor, but they speak volumes about how much care and respect they have for your home. I’ve trusted Gunn Carpentry with multiple projects in my home, and I will hire them again in the future. If you’re looking for a carpenter, run, don’t walk. Adrian and his crew are among the best I’ve ever worked with. Highly, highly recommend!
Adrian Gunn and his team do amazing work. Their craftsmanship, their attention to every detail, their communication at every turn and their general enjoyment of their job made it a pleasure to have them on our property. Our building is nearly 200 years old, the level isn’t level, and the plumb isn’t plumb, yet the Gunn team blended flawlessly the new work into the old. He is the first contractor in a long time to exceed our expectations, by far. We hope to keep Gunn Carpentry busy well into the future. They are an exceptional group. Thank you.
Adrian and his crew renovated my front porch. He was hired to replace the 100 year old decking. When the decking was removed it was clear that some of the joists and beams were in pretty bad shape. He replaced these a a very reasonable additional cost. The porch looks fantastic and I feel confident it will last well into the future! Adrian was very professional and did great work!
We recently had our front porch renovated and one of our bathrooms re-done, and Adrian and his crew were a pleasure to work with from start to finish. They’re hardworking, kind, and priced fairly. We’ll absolutely continue working with them on future projects and highly recommend them.
Adrian Gunn was a pleasure to work with. The stairs in our house were in terrible shape with pine steps that were completely split, a banister that was too low and very loose, the steps were not level, and the null post was split. When we contacted Adrian about repairing them, he was incredibly professional, explained what he would do to address each issue, estimated accurately how long the job would take, and was reasonably priced. He also was able to adjust the work on the fly when we made requested changes. We couldn't be happier with the work he did. We get many compliments on the aesthetic of our stairs and are very pleased. He also hung a door for us and put in a side railing to our side entrance, both of which were wonderfully done. We will certainly be working with him in the future when we have new projects come up.
