Hammer Basement Waterproofing is a family-run New Bedford outfit built around one guy, Emilio, and the crew he runs jobs with — his wife works alongside him on-site, and staff members like Yari and Omar show up across the reviews. Google shows 5 stars from 171 ratings, and BBB grades the company A+. The thing that sets this record apart isn't just the volume of praise — it's how often reviewers describe Emilio talking them out of the more expensive fix. One homeowner's basement utility sink was filling with water, and rather than sell a sump pump, Emilio traced it to a blockage and skipped the pump entirely. Another was quoted for a sump pump, but when water actually showed up, he came back, reassessed, and found it wasn't needed after all. A third got a $20 gutter-extension suggestion instead of the pricier fix another company had already proposed. In a 2024 review, Emilio told a homeowner to try hydraulic cement and drainage rock herself before paying for a sump pump system — two months later her basement was bone dry and she'd saved the money. That pattern repeats: several reviewers say they interviewed multiple other waterproofing specialists first and picked Hammer specifically because the others felt like they were chasing a sale. The installs themselves get described in real detail — sump pumps, French drains, foundation crack sealing, underground gutter extensions — usually finished in hours, with the crew cleaning up before leaving. A couple of reviews double as weather tests: a 2026 review describes a job wrapped up on a Thursday holding through a rainstorm that weekend, and a 2024 review reports a basement staying dry after five inches of rain fell within 24 hours of the crew finishing. Another 2024 review, from a repeat customer, notes a sump pump system Emilio installed back in 2021 was still running well three years on, with annual cleanings in between. The one exception to the five-star run is a four-star review that still calls the sump pump work "a very good job," with no complaint attached. Given how consistently reviewers describe Emilio steering them away from unnecessary work, it's worth going into any estimate with a clear sense of what you think you need and letting him weigh in on it.
We called Hammer Basement when our basement was flooding due to an old “dry well/sump pump/hole in the ground” started to flood our basement. Emilio came over to provide a free estimate. Emilio was beyond helpful and informative, taking the time to explain our options and what he thought our issue was. We ended up having our basement utility sink also filling with water which he explained indicated we likely had a blockage somewhere and likely wouldn’t need a sump pump installed. He was honest, straightforward, and had no intention of trying to talk us into a sump pump if it wasn’t necessary. He referred us to a plumber (Jay Rooter- also great!), who took care of the blockage. Emilio easily could have told us a million different things and gotten us to spend some money, but he didn’t. If the day ever comes when we actually need a sump pump, he’s the guy I’m calling. Thank you Emilio, for your time, expertise and kindness. I highly recommend giving Hammer Basement a call!!!
We are so glad that we went with Hammer Basement! Emilio was quick to respond and showed up when he said he would. Everyone is such a pleasure to deal with. Our basement ended up being a nasty mess to fix and a bigger job than we expected, It was sooo much better after the crew removed all the moldy material and installed a French drain and waterproofed! You won’t regret calling Hammer to help with your basement!
Emilio from Hammer Basement Waterproofing was great to work with. He originally quoted us a fair price for a sump pump solution, but after coming back when we actually had water in the basement, he reevaluated the issue and realized a sump pump might not even be necessary. Instead of pushing unnecessary work, he offered a simpler solution at no cost by drilling a few holes in the concrete slab, and it seems to have worked. It seemed like he was truly looking to help rather than pressure us into a sale. We really appreciated his transparency and would absolutely recommend him.
Emilio and his team were fantastic! Super easy to work with, great communication, and they took the time to explain everything clearly throughout the process. They got us a quote quickly, scheduled the work fast, and the service was excellent from start to finish. They kept everything clean while they were here, and the final product looks so neat and professional. Couldn’t be happier — highly recommend!
All I can say is wow! The crew works so hard and is extremely detail oriented, truly transformed our basement, very professional and experts in what they do Thank you!
