Harold Brothers Mechanical Contractors is a Weymouth mechanical shop that says it's been keeping commercial buildings running since 2008 — not really a residential outfit, but an HVAC, plumbing, and process-piping company built for labs, hospitals, schools, stadiums, and office buildings across Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. Its Massachusetts HVAC/mechanical license is active with the state, and it carries an A+ grade from the Better Business Bureau, though it isn't a BBB-accredited business. Its online footprint is thin for a company that size: Google shows a 4-star average across 16 ratings, and the small handful of written reviews collected since 2021 split noticeably — some praise the technical work, at least one describes a serious billing dispute. With so few independent accounts on record, that split is hard to read as a clear pattern either way, and it's worth going in with eyes open rather than assuming either extreme is typical. Because the company describes itself as built for commercial, institutional, and industrial clients, anyone calling about a routine home repair should confirm upfront that Harold Brothers actually takes on smaller single-family jobs, and should get any diagnosis and quote in writing before authorizing work — especially given the nature of the complaint on record. They read as a better fit for a property manager or facility operator handling a lab, medical building, or multi-unit property who wants a licensed, long-running mechanical contractor with local ties, than for a one-off residential heating call — where it's worth simply asking whether they take the job at all.

Andrew and his helper Cory performed an all-star service on my heating system. Andrew was extremely knowledgeable and knew exactly what was needed within an hour of being there. Unfortunately the part I needed wasn’t available and had to be ordered, but Harold Brothers did a great job at sourcing and receiving the part in a timely manner. 10/10, highly recommended.

*Harold brothers misdiagnosed my HVAC unit twice, costing me thousands. They buried a $1000 refund within a $10,000 quote, and then refused to honor the discount when their $10,000 quote turned out to be bogus (their technician mistakenly thought I had failing compressors)* Details below: Before reading this, please look at my other Google reviews and see that, as a small business owner myself, I’ve only ever left positive reviews to support other businesses. However, Harold Brothers’ conduct towards my business was so shockingly unprofessional that I feel compelled to share my experience so others can avoid wasting large sums of time and money as I did. During routine maintenance, when my HVAC had a cooling issue, their technician wrote in his post-visit summary that I had a breaker problem and even provided a written recommendation for an electrician. I then spent $1,000 on parts and labor to have an electrician come out. He very quickly confirmed the breaker was working perfectly and that the issue was with the HVAC unit itself. Harold Brothers returned and subsequently changed their diagnosis to “two failed compressors,” quoting me $10,500 to replace them. To their credit, they admitted their technician’s mistake and reduced the quote to $9,500 to offset the $1,000 I had wasted. For a small business owner like myself, this is an incredibly large sum of money… so I called other HVAC companies to get second opinions. Not only were the other quotes significantly cheaper, but two separate techs immediately expressed doubt that two Carrier compressors would fail at the exact same time. I ultimately decided to pay another $639 for an independent assessment with a different company. Within one visit, the tech called the Carrier support line and confirmed both compressors were operating normally. He quickly identified the real issue: a clogged air duct filled with dust that was blocking airflow and shutting the system down. I asked Harold Brothers to honor the refund they had already promised, but they refused. Their own technician even came back, confirmed the compressors were fine, and apologized — yet the company still refused to reimburse me the $1,000. In short: Harold Brothers admitted their mistake and tried to charge me nearly $10,000 for completely unnecessary work, and then refused to honor the very refund they had built into that inflated quote. For a company that publicly advertises “integrity” and “ethics,” it is hard to believe this is how they conduct business. Until they make things right, I can only recommend other HVAC companies.
