Jim Lockwood founded this Brookline restoration and energy-efficient-building company in 1984, self-reporting more than four decades in business, and still runs every job himself as project manager. In a 2024 review, a repeat client described him replacing a 100-year-old slate roof with matching slate sourced from the original quarry, along with chimney repointing, new sub-roofing, rubber roofing, copper work, gutters, painting, and stucco repairs — the kind of restoration work the company built its name on. The jobs on record run from landmark-scale restorations to full remodels: a 2024 review described a downtown Hyatt Hotel project completed on time and on budget, a 2023 review covered a basement water-damage repair and a rear addition with a new bathroom, and a 2015 review detailed a kitchen, bathroom, and air-conditioning project. Google shows a 4.7★ average from 15 ratings and Angi shows 4.9★ from 7, spanning reviews back to 2001. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, and the Better Business Bureau lists an A+ grade, though the business isn't BBB accredited. There's one clear exception to that record. In a 2005 Angi addendum, a client reported that grout in a bathroom Lockwood had renovated began cracking about a year and a half after completion; Lockwood initially admitted responsibility and said he'd fix it at his own cost, but after the client hired a different contractor for a later job, he called the grout breakdown 'usual wear and tear' and declined to cover the repair. Separately, older reviews from 2015 and 2004 noted that pricing tended to run high and that Lockwood favored more expensive design solutions, and the 2004 review noted he didn't personally supervise subcontractors on site. For a restoration or high-end remodel — especially anything involving matched materials or historic detail — this is a company with real range and a long history. Get a firm number in writing before work starts, given the pattern of price increases and premium recommendations noted above.
