McCarriston Plumbing & Heating has been working the North Shore since 1940, and in eighty-six years almost nobody has written about it online. BBB records the Swampscott firm as established in 1940 and incorporated in Massachusetts in 1975, with five employees and Peter C. McCarriston as president and treasurer; it is not BBB accredited and carries no BBB rating, because the bureau says it lacks enough information to issue one. What does exist is a work trail. BuildZoom's permit records show 13 permitted plumbing jobs between 2013 and 2021 across Marblehead, Salem and Arlington — bathroom and kitchen renovations, water heaters, and a restaurant fit-out in Salem. A local builder's site lists McCarriston as the plumbing contractor on its projects. Trade press in February and June 2013 named Peter McCarriston of Swampscott as a winner in Lochinvar's VIP contractor drawing — a prize draw, not an award for the work. Two things are worth sorting out before you call. First, the entity: BBB profiles "McCarriston Plumbing & Heating Company, Inc." at a Swampscott PO box, while BuildZoom profiles "McCarriston plumbing & Heating, LLC" at a Marblehead address. Ask which one you would be contracting with. Second, the licences. BBB states Peter McCarriston holds Master Plumber licence #8092, and BuildZoom lists a Massachusetts Plumbing Business licence #4300 as active but unverified with a May 2026 expiry, alongside a second business entry it shows as inactive and at one point cancelled. Those are directory records rather than checks against the state register. With no published customer accounts of any job, the permit history and your own licence lookup are what you have to work with. Ask for the current plumbing business licence number and two recent references before booking.
