McDonald Flooring & Design says it's a fourth-generation, family-run shop, working out of Norwood and covering Westwood, Canton, Medfield, Sharon, and Foxboro. It runs by appointment — homeowners either book an in-home measurement and estimate or visit the Norwood showroom to pick a product. The Better Business Bureau gives the company an A+ and lists 19 years in business, with no complaints on file, though it hasn't sought BBB accreditation. Its written record online is thin so far: the one detailed account, from a customer who hired the crew in July 2024 for a three-part job — new luxury vinyl flooring over a subfloor, carpet replaced on two landings and a stairway, and an oak bedroom floor sanded, stained, and refinished — rated the work three out of five stars, noting the vinyl portion came out well. Google's own page for the business shows a considerably higher 4.7-star average across seven ratings, so that one written review reads more mixed than the platform's headline number for the company. Given how little written feedback exists beyond that one job, it's worth asking McDonald directly about a recent, comparable project before booking, and confirming what an at-home estimate covers. For a straightforward flooring or carpet job in the Norwood area from a business that says it's been family-run for four generations, this is a reasonable one to call — just go in with a few questions of your own given how sparse the public track record still is.

In July 2024, I contracted with MacDonald Flooring to redo the flooring in three residential areas: Install luxury vinyl flooring (LVF) over a subfloor, replace carpeting on two landings and a stairway, and sand/stain/polyurethane an oak bedroom floor. The LVF came out well with the 12x24 tiles tightly fitted together with clean cuts against the wall although one segue to another flooring was not attended to and looks terrible even after an attempt was made to fix it. Part two, the replacement carpeting was done poorly with uneven edges and sloppy cuts around the moldings. Both landings required remedial work with one of the landings requiring a complete redo. The bedroom hardwood floor doesn't look that good because it is bumpy with more stain in the lower areas. However, the floor was very old, so I reserve judgment on that. I had a neighbor who is an interior designer come by to examine the work to see if I was being overly critical, but she agreed that the work was sub par. Then I asked Ms. MacDonald to come over to my house and see the problems for herself, and she did so on the same day. She was businesslike, and we arrived at a solution. As I told her, the contractor's skills were not sufficient to do the job and, in addition, his work habits were unprofessional. For one instance, after installing the new carpeting, he and his crew did not protect it and tramped on it as they worked on other parts of the job. He was a very nice man, but not up to the job. The MacDonald price was competitive, but I would not hire MacDonald Flooring again.
