An air conditioner quit at 2:30 on a Friday afternoon in July and a MillTown technician was at the door within the hour. Speed like that is what people pay this company for — and the price is exactly where the argument about it lives.
MillTown says it has been family-owned since 1979, running plumbing, heating, cooling, electrical and drain and sewer work across Northeastern Massachusetts and Southern New Hampshire. Its Massachusetts HVAC licence, 735-SM-B, is active on the state registry, it holds an active City of Nashua drainlayer licence for sewer and water connections in that city, and the Better Business Bureau has accredited it since 2014 at an A+ grade. Its Google page runs to 4.8 stars across 3,203 ratings.
When reviewers describe the actual work, it tends to be diagnostic rather than replacement-first. In June a homeowner whose two previous plumbers refused to touch ancient radiator valves had a MillTown man come out and lay out the options. In April a sump pump "failure" turned out to be a dead float, and the crew replaced the float instead of the pump. In May a technician traced a leaking pipe at a water heater, said plainly that a patch would work and that the tank was near the end of its life, and left the decision alone. In July an electrician found the fault in the line running to the house; Griffin and Tom replaced it and upgraded the panel the next day, working through the rain.
The pricing complaints are specific and recent. In February 2026 several people in a Lowell Reddit thread told others to avoid the company — one wrote that MillTown quotes what it thinks it can get away with rather than what the job costs, another that the problem is not charging a lot but making the job bigger than it is. In April 2025 a commenter said he was quoted $35,000 for work that cost $10,000 elsewhere, and another described a $25,000 job that opened his walls without finding the problem. A July 2025 Google reviewer says an $85 evaluation fee turned into a price far above the $300 a first plumber had quoted to swap a stove. Even a defender in that thread put it as: they show up when they say, they do a good job, and yes, it costs more.
For an emergency — no heat, no hot water, water coming through a ceiling — this is a company that picks up the phone and turns up, with live licences and a long BBB record behind it. For anything you can plan, get a second quote before signing, ask what the $85 evaluation fee actually buys, and have the estimate broken out line by line.
