Read the reviews for this North Andover general contractor in order and you are reading two companies. Everything before 2025 is written about "MLJ", "MLJ Contractors" or "MLJ General Contractors"; a December 2025 customer states plainly that MLJ is now operating as ML20, and that a third owner had departed the company. Same crew names recur across the whole span - Julliana on the office side, Lourenco running jobs, Elison on the tools - so the continuity is real, but the trading name and at least part of the ownership are not what they were. The work itself is broad: kitchens, bathrooms, basements, second-storey additions, in-law suites and garage conversions, plus new construction, out of 308 Sutton St. The company says it covers a 100-mile radius from North Andover and puts itself at five-plus years. The strongest recent accounts are specific. A May 2026 customer listed a major renovation and addition - two new bathrooms, a mudroom, pantry, Hardie siding, a new roof, flooring - and called the craftsmanship better than expected. In June 2026 two separate customers described patio steps and deck stairs, one noting the job stayed within budget. Going back, a 2024 reviewer described a summer-2023 first-floor remodel in Reading that moved a kitchen and bathroom and added a second-floor bathroom, and said the company returned after completion to fix minor issues. Two accounts pull the other way and both deserve weight. In December 2025, a first-time homeowner wrote that after a 2022 downstairs remodel - a half bath converted to full, a bedroom turned into an in-law suite - mould developed in the shower the company built, and that they then learned no licensed plumber had been used and no permits had been pulled. That is an allegation, not a finding, and it describes work done under the MLJ name; it is still the single most important thing on this page. Separately, in August 2026 a homeowner said they were told a kitchen quote had been emailed, never received it, got no reply to a request to resend, and hired someone else. A 2023 reviewer had also flagged permit miscommunication slowing their job. Worth calling for a substantial renovation or addition, with eyes open. Ask for the permit numbers before work starts, ask who the licensed plumber and electrician on your job will be by name, get the estimate in writing and confirm receipt, and ask directly about the ownership change and what carries over on warranty.
I reached out for a kitchen remodel quote. After following up, I was told the quote had been emailed, but I never received it, even after checking my inbox and spam folder. I asked for it to be resent but never received a response. My experience during the estimate process made me concerned about how communication might be handled during a kitchen remodel, so I decided to go with another contractor.
