Shea Custom Carpentry has run out of Plymouth for what the company says is over 35 years, and every one of the 17 Google reviews on file is five stars. It's a family-owned general contractor, not just a trim-and-cabinets outfit — its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, and its BBB rating is an A+ going back to 2003. Ed Shea, the owner, is the name that shows up in nearly every review; the crew also includes long-time staff Mary, Kevin, Tom and Dan. The reviews describe full renovation work, not small jobs: a 100-year-old Plymouth house having its second floor stripped to the studs and rebuilt with a new master bath, laundry, and repositioned windows for water views; an oceanfront home having its windows, skylights and siding replaced; a complicated built-in installation in the dining room of an unlevel early-1900s house that, per a 2025 review, left it feeling like "a different house." A 2025 patch.com article reported the company had acquired a fellow Plymouth firm, Stanne Construction, extending its combined history on the South Shore and Cape Cod to more than four decades. There's no negative review or complaint on file to weigh here — the record is unusually clean. Several reviewers separately mention the crew's cleanliness on site and Ed's habit of calling personally to walk through decisions before work proceeds. A solid call for a full renovation or addition around Plymouth, the South Shore or Cape Cod — the kind of company homeowners keep coming back to for a second or third project. Worth confirming current scheduling, since reviewers repeatedly mention they stay booked.
“Shea Custom Carpentry Inc. announced its acquisition of another full-service contractor in Plymouth, Stanne Construction Inc., on June 16. Both companies have served customers on the South Shore and Cape Cod for more than four decades, providing home renovations, additions, hardscape services and more.”
We have a 100 year old house in plymouth and had Shea Carpentry do a complete remodel (down to the studs) of our second floor. We provided Ed a list of top level goals and his knack for design turned them into reality, exceeding our expectations. The small single bath was converted to a luxurious master bath, a second bath and upstairs laundry was added, ~20 windows were moved and expanded to maximize water views, and new HVAC installed with rerouted venting to free up attic space. The master bedroom and walk in closet included built in cabinets that our beautiful and superior quality. His in-house team of carpenters and painters do top end , exceptional work, as did the plumber, electrician, HVAC, and office staff. He started on day 1 as promised and a team was there every single day (no downtime) and the 6 month schedule was met with 2 weeks to spare. Open communication helped make the prject go smoothly. Very high praise for Ed and all his team.
What an incredible team! We had a wall of beautiful built-ins installed in our dining room and Ed/his team did an amazing job with our complicated project (house was built in the early 1900s and is very unlevel). It feels like a different house! Everyone was very professional, warm and timely. We are so impressed with the craftsmanship and will certainly seek them out for future projects. Thank you to Ed, Mary, Dan and Tom.
Ed Shea and his crew’s work is always thorough and high quality. They have done several projects for us both big and small. We have been very happy with them all. I strongly encourage having Ed Shea meet with you !
We are very pleased with Shea Custom Carpentry. The work was done on time, on budget, clean and beautifully done with all questions answered quickly. We appreciate Ed Shea and the excellent work of all of his staff - particularly Mary and Kevin. We highly recommend Shea Custom Carpentry and will use them again.
We had a very positive experience with Shea Custom Carpentry from beginning to end. The project entailed the creation of soffits/enclosures for HVAC components in our home. The work was top-notch, and we want to acknowledge, in particular, Kevin the carpenter, Tom the painter, and Mary in the office. Kevin is absolutely meticulous and a highly skilled craftsman, having created for us wood and drywall soffits with access panels that blend perfectly with the surrounding wall and ceiling surfaces. Tom did a great job painting the new soffits and, where necessary, adjacent wall and ceiling surfaces so that the new construction blended seamlessly with the existing surfaces. Mary scheduled the job visits and communicated with us in a friendly, highly professional manner. We would highly recommend Shea Custom Carpentry to anyone considering specialized, custom work.
