Shea Custom Carpentry has been building and remodeling homes around Plymouth, Cape Cod, and Boston's South Shore since the mid-1990s — carpentry is literally the middle name. Owner Ed Shea, the company says, has more than three decades in the field, running the operation with office manager Mary and a small crew — Dan, Tom, and Kevin — who customers name directly when describing the work. A review from this March lays out the kind of job they take on: a full stud-out remodel of an entire second floor in a 100-year-old Plymouth house, adding a master bath, a second bath, and laundry, with the homeowner saying Ed's design sense exceeded what they'd asked for. That tracks with a longer pattern — custom built-ins and finish carpentry come up again and again across the company's history, Google has it at a full 5 stars across 21 ratings, and the Better Business Bureau has accredited the business since 2003 with an A+ grade and no complaints on file. Two things are worth asking about before signing anything. First, how long the company has actually operated under this name is inconsistent across its own sources: the website says over 35 years, BBB's file (opened in 2003, business started in 1995) puts it at 31, and a news item on the 2025 acquisition of fellow Plymouth contractor Stanne Construction claims more than four decades. Second, the review pace has slowed lately — only one new review has landed in the past six months — so ask for references from a current job rather than leaning on reviews from a few years back. This reads as the call for a serious renovation or addition, not a quick patch job, where custom woodwork matters and the same small crew stays on-site start to finish. Confirm current licensing and insurance paperwork directly and ask to see a recent project before committing.

We have a 100 year old house in plymouth and had Shea Carpentry do a complete remodel (down to the studs) of our second floor. We provided Ed a list of top level goals and his knack for design turned them into reality, exceeding our expectations. The small single bath was converted to a luxurious master bath, a second bath and upstairs laundry was added, ~20 windows were moved and expanded to maximize water views, and new HVAC installed with rerouted venting to free up attic space. The master bedroom and walk in closet included built in cabinets that our beautiful and superior quality. His in-house team of carpenters and painters do top end , exceptional work, as did the plumber, electrician, HVAC, and office staff. He started on day 1 as promised and a team was there every single day (no downtime) and the 6 month schedule was met with 2 weeks to spare. Open communication helped make the prject go smoothly. Very high praise for Ed and all his team.

What an incredible team! We had a wall of beautiful built-ins installed in our dining room and Ed/his team did an amazing job with our complicated project (house was built in the early 1900s and is very unlevel). It feels like a different house! Everyone was very professional, warm and timely. We are so impressed with the craftsmanship and will certainly seek them out for future projects. Thank you to Ed, Mary, Dan and Tom.

We had a very positive experience with Shea Custom Carpentry from beginning to end. The project entailed the creation of soffits/enclosures for HVAC components in our home. The work was top-notch, and we want to acknowledge, in particular, Kevin the carpenter, Tom the painter, and Mary in the office. Kevin is absolutely meticulous and a highly skilled craftsman, having created for us wood and drywall soffits with access panels that blend perfectly with the surrounding wall and ceiling surfaces. Tom did a great job painting the new soffits and, where necessary, adjacent wall and ceiling surfaces so that the new construction blended seamlessly with the existing surfaces. Mary scheduled the job visits and communicated with us in a friendly, highly professional manner. We would highly recommend Shea Custom Carpentry to anyone considering specialized, custom work.
