Our large aging back deck sustained tree damage and we needed a completely rebuilt deck. We engaged South Eastern Carpentry for a new rebuild. We couldn't be happier with our new deck! We were hesitant to even write this glowing review because we need these guys to be available for our future renovation projects! From the initial consultation with Steve (the owner), all the way through the project, the entire process was professional, organized, and stress-free. In our experience, many contractors bid projects artificially low and then try to recoup costs by requesting change orders for increased labor or materials or by using unskilled labor and working as quickly as possible to minimize labor costs. South Eastern Carpentry is not a low-bid, multiple change order, minimally-acceptable final product kind of company. The initial estimate was higher than some other companies that submitted bids for this project, but the final price did not exceed the estimate. In fact, Steve did not increase the price even though we encountered some hidden site conditions and other issues outside Steve’s control that increased his costs. Steve also generously made some materials upgrades on his own initiative and at no additional charge, including very thoughtfully adding an accessibility railing for the benefit of our elderly parents who live with us and providing invaluable assistance with our insurance claim, helping us to secure insurance funding to cover some of the cost. Unlike some owners, Steve is the one doing the actual work alongside his son-in-law Rick, both of whom have decades of experience. Rick and Steve were punctual, respectful, and paid close attention to every detail. They came to work every day during the heat of summer and even worked through rainy conditions where possible. Whenever challenges arose, they worked with us to come up with truly creative solutions. Steve’s standards and expectations for himself, in terms of quality, craftsmanship, and appearance, are the highest we have ever observed in a contractor – frankly we think they are unreasonably high. Even the tiniest imperfections (and there weren’t many) really seemed to bother him even though they were barely even noticeable to us. Steve also works with local area technical high schools – donating materials for the students - and takes on a student intern in the summer. The intern gets the opportunity to learn valuable skills from an experienced professional. It’s a great program and we are proud to have had the opportunity to participate. The intern, Owen, did a great job! Steve’s care and craftsmanship consistently go above and beyond, in every way. When this project started, we were envisioning a simple Trex deck - no frills, no real style, just a basic structure. Steve worked with us to explore more aesthetically pleasing possibilities and we ultimately empowered him to put his own creative flourishes on the project. The craftsmanship is outstanding, and the finished deck has wildly exceeded our expectations in both quality and appearance. The deck is so beautiful Steve may need to come back and renovate the rest of our house to match it! Communication was excellent throughout the project, and Steve kept us informed every step of the way. It's clear he takes pride in his work and genuinely cares about customer satisfaction. We feel so lucky to have found a contractor that is so transparent, honest, detail-oriented, and trustworthy.
