Eighty-three permitted projects across six Massachusetts towns, and exactly one customer rating. That gap is the thing to understand about Stutman Contracting: it is a public-and-commercial builder whose work turns up in municipal permit files and state project pages far more than in homeowner reviews. The Oxford company says Steven Stutman started it in 1982 as a small carpentry shop doing additions, decks and renovations for multi-family housing and commercial clients — a start date the Better Business Bureau also puts at June 1982, making it 44 years in business. Its own site describes the firm today as an SDO-certified, women-owned business led by President Jillian Baker, who it says joined in 2007 and became owner in 2024; those are the company's words, not a registry confirmation. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active. The public work is where things get concrete. Worcester Business Journal reported in 2022 that Stutman had been chosen as the builder for a Worcester Housing Authority apartment project. When the 2018 Wood Design Awards were announced, WoodWorks listed the company as the contractor on a winning building. State and municipal pages list it as a general contractor on public jobs and as an awarded bidder, and its BuildZoom permit history runs through Worcester, Fitchburg, Framingham, Arlington, Auburn and Boylston. The homeowner voice is the missing piece. A single 5-star Google rating is all there is; its BBB page is an A+ without accreditation and carries no reviews, and BuildZoom shows none either. Two things are worth raising on a first call. OSHA's inspection database carries a record naming Stutman Contracting — an inspection listing is not a finding, and the page states no outcome, so ask what it covered and how it closed. Federal court dockets also list Stutman Contracting, Inc. v. Hussey Seating Company, a contract dispute the company itself brought against a supplier. For a multi-unit building, a municipal or state-funded job, or a substantial commercial renovation, this is a shop with decades of permitted work and an active registration behind it. For a single-family kitchen or bath, ask for two or three recent residential references, and confirm the SDO and DCAMM certifications with the issuing agencies, since both come from the company's own site.
