Customers writing in 2020 and 2024 alike credit Duncan Thorne personally for both designing and building the work. Thorne Design & Build describes itself as a small Framingham design-build firm doing custom homes, additions, carriage houses and whole-home remodels, often with custom millwork and reclaimed materials. According to its site, the firm was established in 1997, and Thorne, its principal, holds a Bachelor of Architecture from UC Berkeley. An April 2020 Houzz reviewer said Thorne had done four projects on their house: a room division, a living room and basement redesign, complete bathroom replacements, and a garage and mudroom addition that involved reconfiguring the driveway and building retaining walls. In an April 2020 review, the owner of a Victorian home described a kitchen with a built-in nook, reclaimed wood and a stained glass window, a waterproofed basement with an acid-stained concrete floor, and a study with a live-edge desk and a ladder up to a loft. Another April 2020 reviewer mentioned a $150k two-story addition and called his prices very reasonable. That reviewer also said he did not hold an architect's licence, despite years at architecture school. An August 2020 reviewer who bought a contemporary craftsman house Thorne built in Stow said no space in it went unused. In February 2024, Angi customers described a great room addition, a master suite addition with an intricate staircase and tower, and a whole-house gut of a second home. Another said a two-car garage with a loft, built into a hill and completed in 2011, had held up with no maintenance. The firm holds 5.0 stars on both Houzz (8 ratings) and Angi (5 ratings). Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #155595 in Duncan Thorne's name, is expired on the state registry. The company's website still describes it as a registered home improvement contractor.
