Tufts Construction is an Everett underground-utility and excavation contractor built for exactly the kind of emergency the trade implies: a broken water main, a collapsed sewer line, a flooded basement at 2 a.m. The company says it has more than 35 years in the trade, doing water and sewer line replacement, site development, paving, demolition and municipal snow removal for residential, commercial and municipal clients. Across 23 Google reviews from 2021 through 2026, the same story repeats: a homeowner discovers a broken water or sewer line, calls, and a crew — reviewers consistently credit a company principal named Peter — shows up the same day or the next morning, even on a Saturday. A 2025 review describes replacing a lead water pipe from the street main to the house with new copper pipe, and another from 2025 recounts replacing more than 100 feet of corroded cast-iron sewer line running through a foundation. Reviewers across the years single out Peter personally answering calls and walking them through options, and the crew handling city permitting directly. The most recent review, from June 2026, describes the crew doing quick, easy work at a customer's shop — the same pattern holding up years in. Worth knowing before calling: Tufts spent several years in litigation against the City of Malden, alleging the city hadn't paid for municipal work performed and seeking more than $10 million in damages; the case ended in a 2025 mistrial and a 2026 settlement in which Malden agreed to pay the company over $1.2 million. Separately, a 2023 Reddit thread referenced a report that the company faced tax evasion and false-loan-application charges tied to the IRS — one commenter called it unrelated to the quality of the work and said they'd hire the company again, but it's a serious matter worth asking about directly. For a homeowner with a broken water or sewer line who wants a crew that has done this underground work for decades and can navigate the permitting, Tufts has a long track record for exactly that job — just go in aware of the legal history above and get everything in writing.
“Can you comment on the Tufts lawsuit and the recent settlement? Who paid for the lawsuit and settlement?”
“the emergency city council meeting to vote to go in to executive session regarding the matter of Tufts Construction, Inc., v. The City of Malden, Middlesex Superior Court Docket #2181CV01248.”
“This contractor did excellent quality work. Trying to cancel them is just stupid. It's a matter between them and the IRS. As far as I'm concerned, I'd hire them again because at the end of the day - it's the quality of work they delivered and the negotiated price I paid!”
“Tufts Construction: you know them... Medford Contractor Charged with Tax Evasion and Filing False Loan Applications”
“Mayor Gary Christenson signed the settlement on Monday, March 2 which agreed to have Malden pay more than $1.2 million to Tufts Construction in three installments throughout the next two years.”
“Judge Adam Hornstine declared the mistrial in Tufts Construction Inc. v. City of Malden on Aug. 6. Tufts Construction is seeking damages in excess of $10 million on claims stemming from the city’s alleged failure to pay for work performed by the plaintiff.”
We recently had Peter's crew do some work at our shop and they were awesome to work with. Shout-out to the guys for putting in the work and getting it done quick and easy!
Tufts Construction replaced the entire water line from my cellar to the city water main in the street after a leak was discovered. The crew was hard-working, skillful, and professional throughout in difficult weather conditions. The excavation was neat and the crew put my yard and driveway back in order after the new water line was installed. I highly recommend Tufts Construction!!
Tufts Construction did a wonderful job replacing the lead water pipe connecting the main street line to my house with a new copper pipe. I called Peter at Tufts Construction when I noticed my garage had flooded from a break in the waterline in my driveway and he came out right away to assess the situation and then scheduled his crew to do the work the very next day! Peter and his entire crew were excellent - very professional, skilled, speedy, and friendly! They replaced my broken pipe and re-paved my driveway in record time, and the results exceeded my expectations! Really great service - highly recommend!!!
We had a leaky water service that needed replacing. The house is on a rocky hillside with old crumbly retaining walls so it is a bit tricky. We got a few quotes from contractors including one that essentially said "we don't know what it will cost and aren't liable for any damages to the retaining walls". Tufts had it done same day at the price quoted with no trouble and replaced the sewer line at the same. I highly recommend Tufts for any water sewer work.
We had a great experience with Tufts Construction replacing our sewer line. We were anxious about the whole process, but Peter allayed those fears with clear communication and professionalism. They exposed the old cast iron to clay connection and replaced 100+ feet of sewer with new 4" PVC all the way to the city main. The team was on time, professional, and efficient. We were pleasantly surprised that they wrapped up the entire project in just one day. Frank kept us informed throughout the work, and the whole crew was friendly. Many thanks to Peter, Frank, and the whole crew!
