Village Carpet is a one-storefront operation on Main Street in downtown Reading, and it has been there long enough that the family running it is on its second generation. Charlie Collings worked as an installer before opening the store in 1979 with his wife Linda, the company says, and their son Mike has since joined him on the floor. Forty-seven years is the store's own count of its tenure. The work is showroom trade: carpet, hardwood, laminate, luxury vinyl, vinyl and area rugs, sold and installed. Reading is the only town it names as its own service area, and it calls itself Boston's Stainmaster Showcase dealer — the store's own claim, not something confirmed elsewhere. The written history is short. Google carries a 4.6 average across 10 ratings, but only five customers have written anything, spread from 2023 to 2026. What the positive ones keep pointing at is the showroom rather than the crew: a 2024 customer who had struck out at another business said the selection and the help made the decision easy, and told other shoppers to start here. A 2026 review named an installer, Shawn, and credited him with kitchen and bathroom work at a price that customer thought fair. The one detailed complaint, from November 2025, is about the office rather than the floors. That buyer returned sample boards, was told the scheduler would call, and heard nothing for a week; after going back in person to book a measuring appointment, they took a half day off work and nobody came, then were offered the following week with no apology. Separately, a January 2023 customer who liked both the carpet and the service noted it arrived smelling of vape. For someone who wants to put hands on samples and talk to the same people on every visit, a small, long-running Main Street store is a sensible first stop. Pin the measuring appointment down in writing and ask who calls you if it moves — that is exactly where this store's one substantive complaint landed. Massachusetts does not require home improvement contractor registration for floor-covering-only work, so nothing here turns on its absence.
Very helpful and reasonable priced . Shawn did a great job with both kitchen and bathroom. I would highly recommend. Peter McAvoy
First encounter here was okay, picked put a few boards brought them home and made a final pick, after that it went down hill, the associate that schedule wasn't in when we returned the boareds was told we would get a call, 1 week later no call, went in and spoke directly with the scheduler for measuring and she said we were schedule at 1 pm on Wednesday, ( no one communicated this to us ) I took a half day off work to be there and by 1:30 no one showed up. Called spoke to the same lady and was told they could come next Wednesday is that okay. No apology or acknowledgement of missing the appointment. I was looking forward to the new carpet but if this is the service I get while trying to give them my money at 12 to 17 dollars a square foot , I would hate to see what the services is if there is an issue and they already have my money. Really was trying to support local here but ended up with a pointless vacation day and disappointed.
The process could not have been easier! After a discouraging interaction with another business, I stopped into Village Carpet and was quickly impressed by their level of customer service and selection. Make Village Carpet your first stop!
wonderful experience! So patient and understanding.....wonderful work. Would recommend and use again.
I had a very good experience here the carpets and service were amazing, however, the carpet's did smell very fruity and like a vape smell. My carpets came having this smell and I know its from a vape because its the exact same smell my brothers apartment smells like who vapes 24/7. Not a huge deal to me but just wanted to raise awareness because maybe a worker is hitting their vape in the store, which could turn off others from buying something.
