Boston Fence & Vinyl, out of Beverly, is one of the most reviewed fence companies on the North Shore — 115 reviews on record, spanning cedar, vinyl, aluminum, and custom scalloped and rail styles, most of it built around two names that keep coming up: Nick on sales and design, and installation crews people describe by name. The volume and range of work is real, and so, in a smaller number of cases, are the complaints. The strongest pattern in the record is problem-solving on difficult sites. In a 2025 review, one customer described a fence built to work around a septic system, a neighbor's easement, and an attached staircase, with no gaps for dogs to escape through. Another, also from 2025, described a design worked out around a home on a slope, with the crew proposing a symmetric stepped layout before digging a single post. A 2025 review described a property sitting on ledge that made three different fence styles a challenge to install correctly. Reviewers also describe the company returning after the fact: a 2025 review described a repair after a delivery driver rammed a fence section, and another 2025 review noted Boston Fence backing its work with maintenance visits in a way "not everyone" does. There's a real minority pattern worth knowing before calling. A 2025 review described a sales rep writing up a contract for the wrong fence style, then responding to the customer's objection by putting the blame back on them for not communicating clearly. Two 2022 reviews describe the company handling problems poorly: in one, eight fence posts rotted out within two years of installation, and the company declined to cover replacement for the home's new owner beyond materials and labor; in the other, from the same year, a small repair request went unresolved for over a month and the reviewer called the company's customer service dismissive. A 2024 Reddit comment, answering a request for fencing recommendations, called the experience with Boston Fence "horrible" in the same breath as praising a competitor — no specifics given. Most of the record doesn't look like that. Reviewers repeatedly cite Nick's responsiveness through design and installation, pricing that came in favorably against multiple competing bids, and small requests — a handful of replacement parts, a minor gate repair — handled without pushback. For a straightforward install the pattern is strongly positive; given the occasional dispute over warranty coverage and miscommunication on style, it's worth confirming the fence style and any post-installation warranty terms in writing before signing.
“Got quotes from Boston, JC, and James Patrick. Driving around I’ve seen a lot of Boston, reliable, patriot and James Patrick. James’s consistently look the best by far to me, patriot and Boston seem comparable, reliable is pretty consistently the worst look to me. James’s quote was the most expensive by quite a bit. Boston’s quote was reasonable, but JC beat it. They also used pounded posts instead of digging (they drive a metal post about 6-8 feet into the ground and then fit the vinyl post over it), which should be much sturdier and less susceptible to frost heave. It was also way faster. Went with them and they were great. Highly recommend.”
“We’ve used Boston Fence for three different projects on our property and they’re great to work with, creative around challenges, and have high quality work.”
“Boston Fence in Beverly does good work, but I am under the impression that they aren’t cheap 20’ including a gate is two panels and four posts; you may want to entertain DIY options because that’s $500 in materials compared to at least $2,500 to get them out there. I inherited an older fence and it took some learning but I’m a couple dozen panels and posts in (the fence of Theseus) and it’s not that hard/the end result is good quality. Need some tools and definitely two people”
“I had a great experience with Boston Fence. I had a few concerns due to some particulars of my yard and they were like “yeah yeah we know what we’re doing it’ll be fine” which made me a little nervous on a ~$10k project but they did a phenomenal job. Spent extra time on all the details so it looks great and is super sturdy (and 100% dog escape proof).”
