Broco Energy is the heating oil and emergency fuel company at 168 Hale St in Haverhill, and the trade press traces it to 2007, when Bobby Brown bought a used oil truck for about $7,000. Homeowners across Essex County hire it for fuel delivery and for the heating side of the house — oil burners, boilers and furnaces. What customers return to, over and over, is that the truck actually shows up. A homeowner writing in December 2025 was down to an eighth of a tank after their previous supplier fell behind; Broco staff coordinated after hours and had a driver out the next morning, New Year's Eve, for someone who wasn't yet a customer. Another, days earlier, had called more than ten companies advertising after-hours service during a snowstorm and said Broco was the one that came. In February 2025 a driver who couldn't get up an iced driveway parked on the far side of the house and walked the hose through the backyard. The repair side draws the same kind of specific praise. In January 2025 a service manager came out personally to inspect and fix a customer's boiler after a mishap; in August 2024 a homeowner facing major repairs credited the lead technician with walking them through work they didn't understand; and in a February 2023 review, a furnace that died at 11pm in sub-zero weather because the oil had gelled had two technicians on site within hours and three more over the following days. Google shows 4.6 stars from 131 ratings and the Better Business Bureau grades the company A+. The complaints cluster in two places, and both are worth raising. The first is the service and dispatch desk: a March 2026 customer was charged for a delivery that was then refused because the driveway wasn't shoveled and ran out of oil waiting; another that month, a seven-year customer, described being talked over and threatened with a hang-up by an office supervisor; an October 2025 reviewer had a technician miss two booked appointments; and another that month put it plainly, calling Broco a good oil supplier with a disappointing service department. Three of the six reviews in the last six months are negative, so ask who handles your service calls and get appointment times confirmed in writing. The second is the Hale Street depot itself. In January 2026 the Haverhill City Council unanimously revoked an approved increase to the company's flammable fuel storage permit after it failed to notify abutters within the statutory deadline; thirteen neighbors had petitioned against the propane expansion, and in May 2026 the council granted a third 30,000-gallon tank only after the owner withdrew part of the request. None of that touches a delivery to your house, but it is public record about how the company handles process. If you want a supplier that will come out in a storm, the track record here is deep and specific. Confirm the price per gallon and the auto-delivery terms up front — a 2023 customer reported unwanted deliveries at about $4 a gallon — and get service appointments in writing.
“On a six to four vote Tuesday, the Haverhill City Council granted Broco Energy a permit to add a third 30,000-gallon propane storage tank after company owner Robert Brown withdrew the use of three tanker trailers and a permit to store 8,000 gallons of empty customer tanks.”
“Thirteen residents who live near Broco Energy on Hale Street are asking the Haverhill City Council to deny a permit to allow the company to increase its propane storage capacity.”
“the Haverhill City Council voted to revoke an approved increase to Broco Energy’s flammable fuel storage permit after the company failed to notify abutters within the statutory deadline.”
“The Haverhill City Council unanimously revoked a flammable storage permit previously granted to the heating oil and emergency fuel company at 168 Hale St.”
“Councilors will hold a hearing to revoke a permit it previously issued to Broco Energy for additional propane storage at its 168 Hale St. depot.”
I changed my parents over to Broco services about 8 years ago, and wish that I’d done it sooner! From office staff, drivers/delivery folk and even the owners, we have had nothing but superior, friendly, understanding service. My parents both passed last year, and the house has been sold, but Broco continues to service us at our new house. Thank you for the time, caring and understanding that you all had as we progressed through our Alzheimer’s journey. I couldn’t ask for better care and service, and highly recommend them to anyone looking for new fuel delivery.
Top notch service
We switched over to Broco a few years ago, and it's proven to be a great decision. Mandy Dogherty, the Office Manager, couldn't be nicer to deal with, very professional, courteous and helpful. Knowing they'll be there for us, for fuel delivery or service, is comforting, especially when a New England Winter gets underway.
UPDATE: There was a City hearing in May regarding an increase in propane storage capacity. You can find the article on WHAV.net. I am aware the current construction is by the City of Haverhill and not Broco. I sincerely hope the owners choose transparency, integrity, and open communication with the neighborhood instead of responding in ways that many find misleading. I pray they find peace and recognize the importance of earning the trust of the community they serve. Rather than replying in dismissive ways that further the testament of their character. ~~~ Original review: I have never purchased oil from this company, so I can’t speak to the quality of its products or services. However, as someone who lives next to this facility, I feel it’s important to share the impact it has had on our neighborhood. The constant noise at all hours of the day and night has made it difficult to sleep and has completely changed what was once a quiet, peaceful neighborhood. The expansion of this large industrial operation has also affected the character of the area and, in my opinion, has negatively impacted nearby property values. Since the mill fire down the street, many of us also worry about living next to a continually growing oil facility. The bright floodlights shine through the night, making it impossible to enjoy the night sky or even see the stars anymore. Interactions with some workers passing through the neighborhood have also been unpleasant, as they have often come across as rude. If your purchasing decisions take into account how companies affect the communities around them, I hope you’ll consider the impact this facility has had on those of us who live nearby. Living here has become far more stressful than it once was. I can’t help but think of the stories I read growing up about oil/industrial companies cutting down trees and getting rid of nature. I never imagined I would watch my own childhood neighborhood change this way. Many of my neighbors and I opposed this company’s expansion because we were concerned about its impact on our community. What was once a quiet, beautiful neighborhood with trees and dark, star-filled skies has been transformed by an ever-expanding industrial operation. The neighborhood is heartbroken.
Customer service is horrible. We picked this company over 7 years ago, remained loyal because of them being Veteran owned, and we respect servicemen of this country, spent over 15k in the last 7 years and keep having on going issues with service. The woman in the office who supervises does not let you talk, threatens to hang up on you, honestly we are going to be forced to switch and instruct others to switch who we referred because of her and the ongoing issues. Please refresh on customer service skills and have empathy towards your loyal customers.
