Fifty-three Google ratings averaging 4.9, and behind most of them sits the same kind of story: the heat quit, and someone from Carter's turned up quickly. Carter's Heating & Cooling works out of Haverhill on boilers, furnaces, water heaters and air conditioning, for houses and light commercial buildings. The company says it has been family run and owned since 2012, and its Better Business Bureau page names David J Carter as owner and carries an A+ grade, though the business isn't accredited there. Two first names recur in review after review — Dave, and technician Aaron — which tells you roughly the size of the operation you're hiring. The last six months run one way: eleven reviews, none of them negative. A homeowner whose oil furnace failed in February wrote that the crew was on scene within two hours of the call and had a new furnace installed days later. In April, another described a Sunday-morning callout for a burner that wouldn't fire — the technician landed on the ignitor, found the original part discontinued, and fitted a newer version. Scheduled work draws the same notes: the annual service booked around the customer's calendar, Aaron and Adam arriving at the set time, the area left clean. Two dissenting voices sit further back in its history. One customer knocked off a star over a tip request on the online invoice; another rejected a technician's recommendation to replace a batch of parts after a late arrival. They are outnumbered, but they point at the two things worth pinning down before you book — what the invoice will actually include, and how a large repair quote is broken out if you want a second opinion. This is the call for a small Haverhill shop that picks up when the furnace dies on a cold Sunday and sends people who explain what they're doing. Ask for the license and insurance certificates, and get any big parts-and-labor quote itemized in writing before the work starts.
