Charland Appliance Center is a one-man Peabody shop on Spring Street that both sells appliances — new and reconditioned — and repairs any make or model, in the store or at your house. Michael Charland runs it; customers also name Moses and Rich, and reviewers routinely deal with the owner himself rather than a dispatcher. Speed is the thing people write about most. A reviewer in March 2026 had a clothes dryer fixed within an hour of calling, at a price they called very reasonable, and got a handwritten thank-you note a few days later. A 2022 customer who rang six appliance places around Beverly said this was the only one who would give them the time of day, and had someone out within the hour to diagnose and order the part. Another in 2022 described Mr Charland arriving on time to the minute the day before Thanksgiving, with the right tools and the correct parts already in the van. The diagnostic work draws specific praise too. In June 2025 a customer with a GE Cafe gas oven wrote that Michael Charland came the same day, tracked down parts persistently, and discovered that a previous company's installation five years earlier had never converted all the valves from natural gas to propane — a safety problem they had not known about. A September 2024 reviewer described a wall oven and downdraft cooktop installation done down to the right screws and a perfect level. The complaints are real and worth reading. The most substantial is recent and comes from a property manager who says that over a decade of using the shop for a landlord client, roughly the last five years brought rising prices for repairs and reconditioned appliances and, more seriously, repeated no-shows when trying to schedule work. A 2023 caller found whoever answered the phone unhelpful and lost the sale in a minute, and a 2021 reviewer was annoyed that changed Saturday hours were posted only on the door, not on the voicemail or social media. Phone manner and scheduling reliability, not the repairs themselves, are where the negatives cluster. Ask for a firm appointment window and a confirmation call, and ask up front what a reconditioned appliance carries for warranty. For a fast diagnosis on a broken oven, dryer or fridge from someone who turns up with the parts, the recent record is strong.
“Call Moses from charland appliance. He's been repairing appliances for 36 years. Reasonable price insured free estimates. 978-601-8737.”
4.3 stars my azz. I don't know how when I've had repeated bad experiences with them. Long story. I'm a property manager and one of my landlord clients always used them for repairs and would purchase their reconditioned appliances for their rentals. I've managed for this landlord for over a decade. At some point maybe 5 years ago, Charland became more unreliable and prices for repairs and appliances went up. The bigger issue was that they would blow us off many times when we would schedule or attempt to schedule repairs or replacements. It happened too many times to the point where I got the owner to agree to stop using them because it was causing problems with our tenants that were waiting unreasonable time with a non-working stove or refrigerator. At the beginning of this summer, the appliance repair guy that I have been using for the last several years that I've been very happy with, was away for two weeks and I had two appliance issues I needed addressed. One of them was with the landlord that used to use Charland. It was a coin operated dryer that my current guy had already looked at it and told me the needed parts were not available for purchase anymore. I also called manufacturers and appliance part companies myself and verified this. But it was her choice and she wanted to see if the guys at Charland could fix this coin operated dryer. They came out and looked and said they could fix it and would order the part. First part didn't work. They ordered another one. Didn't work either. Now mind you during all of this they neglected to come and install the second part for almost a week after receiving it (this is the type of thing that really made me tire of using them before). Finally they admitted that these parts weren't working and offered us a credit for what we already paid something like $600 to repair, toward a new coin operated dryer we would purchase through them. But they hike up the price so much it's like they're getting the payment for both and not really crediting us anything. They wanted like $1,800 or 2 Grand for the new dryer. We have no other choice at this point and just have them install it. My landlord client agreed, never again after this. Now, the same time as this dryer repair was going on when my regular guy was away, I had a refrigerator that was not cooling. This was in the middle of this past June. They installed a part that did not fix the problem (charged $500). They kept putting off coming back with additional parts and the current tenants were due to move out July 4th. So they went the last 3-4 weeks without a working refrigerator. I had a new tenant set to move in on August 1st. They kept telling me they would come and install the new part and never did. August 1st came and the new part was still not installed. I finally got them to go on the 2nd. That still did not fix the problem and the refrigerator was still not cooling. It was a repeat of the dryer situation all over again and they offered to sell us a replacement refrigerator for another $2000, and we just lost the $500 we paid for nothing. Doesn't this sound scammy? I only used them again against my better judgment because the other landlord wanted to and I figured I'd give them the chance with the refrigerator at the same time since I did not have access to my current repair man. But I fully regret using them again. Wasted landlord's money, and hurt tenant relations. I recommend everyone to stay away from this company.
Mike and Mose are great to work with. Always very responsive and will give you the repair as well as the replace option. I would highly recommend using them for all of your appliance needs!
We recently had an issue with our clothes dryer. Moses from Charland Appliance was here within an hour of my call and fixed it for a very reasonable price. A few days later, I received an actual hand-written thank you note. Easy five stars and would highly recommend.
We had an issue with our GE Cafe gas oven recently, and contacted Charland Appliance Center. Michael Charland came that same day, quickly diagnosed the problem, went out of his way (with persistence) to locate and obtain the required parts, and got the oven running properly. It turns out that the original installation over 5 years ago (from a different company) was not done correctly, not converting all valves from Natural Gas to Propane, which has been a significant safety issue unbeknownst to us! Kudos to Michael for a job well done, very prompt, professional, and courteous service! Highly recommended! A+
This is a review of customer service on the phone and I do not want to know what the products are like but judging from the help I got on the phone I would give it a try and at least call this company and work with them. The gentleman that answered the phone seemed older and experienced and he helped me with an issue with a Frigidaire refrigerator right over the phone it was something simple but he was helpful personable and nice and old-fashioned and I appreciate it immensely after calling many other places where service people we are not available because they were on the the road Or not nice People taking appointments who didn't want to bother with a small question. Thanks again and I will try to give this place business in the future.
