Cuddy Brothers Plumbing & Heating is a family-run shop out of Medford that says it has covered the Greater Boston area for more than 50 years — the kind of outfit homeowners call when the heat goes out overnight or a fixture needs fixing fast. Its written record dates almost entirely to 2013 to 2015: 22 reviews across Angi and HomeAdvisor (which mirror each other), averaging 4.7 stars from 70 total ratings on those platforms. Reading through the accounts that are available, a clear pattern emerges — Chris Cuddy himself tends to take the call. In a February 2015 review, a customer described him calling back within 20 minutes on a frigid Saturday morning and arriving within 30 to fix a dead furnace; a March 2015 review recounts the same responsiveness for a no-heat emergency, plus a walkthrough of how the repaired system worked. Garbage disposal swaps, water heater replacements, and boiler repairs come up again and again as the bread-and-butter jobs. The record isn't spotless. A 2013 review contrasts a senior plumber's careful work with a "young man" sent to install a toilet that leaked right away and reportedly went unaddressed; a 2014 review says a requested toilet replacement was never completed after the initial consultation. These are dated accounts, not current complaints, but worth knowing the company has had inconsistent follow-through on some jobs. On paper, the business checks out: its Massachusetts plumbing license is active and verified against the state registry, held by Christopher Cuddy, and the Better Business Bureau rates it A+. BuildZoom also lists two Massachusetts home-improvement-contractor registrations for the company that are now inactive — not required for plumbing work itself, but worth asking about if the job veers into a broader remodel. Cuddy Brothers looks like the right call for a straightforward heating or plumbing emergency, especially if Chris is the one showing up. Before booking, it's worth confirming who will actually be on the job and getting a firm price up front, since the sharpest complaints on file involve junior crew work and after-the-fact costs.
“I have worked with Cuddy Brothers on two separate projects and have found them to be incredibly knowledgeable plumbers. Chris and his team have many decades of experience between them and they have provided sound advice that have improved the outcomes of both of my projects. The bigger of the two jobs I hired them for involved plumbing i”
I had a carpenter and he was laying down floors and I needed to put in a new vanity. So, he fixed it. He could put in the new vanity. He didn't fix it - the plumbing was there but, he worked on the vanity. He said, "But you have to lift it up and move it at an angle to get it off without having to cut the plumbing pipes." This guy kept insisting that, "No. It couldn't come off. It couldn't come off." So, I took it off and hurt my back doing it because I'm not used to lifting heavy things. But I took it off, didn't have to remove the plumbing and then he said, "No. You're going to have to remove it. You can't put it back. You can't put it back." I said, "No. Just leave it alone then because I'm not going to pay you to put in more plumbing." But when I left the room, to get something, he cut the pipes and then put the thing back and charged me extra because the pipe had to be cut. Now, if the carpenter could do it, and I could do it, I don't understand why the plumber couldn't do it. I had to spend more than the big deal amount. I was very disappointed in the fact that he couldn't do what everybody else seemed to be able to do. He seemed like a very pleasant person. He came when he said he would.
On Monday morning we woke up with no heat. At 8:15 AM I called Cuddy Brothers and spoke with Chris. He said they could come out in the afternoon, and asked that I text him the address. He also said he might be able to get there sooner, and that he would let me know within the hour. He called back about 45 minutes later to say he would be there in about 30 minutes. He was friendly and professional on the phone and in person. He assessed the situation, listened to my description of the noise the boiler was making and what we had already tried, and was quickly able to diagnose the problem. He didn't have the part in his truck, so went to get it from his shop. He replaced the part, made sure everything was running again, then gave me a tutorial on how the system works. Although the job took more than an hour as he had to go to his shop he only charged for an hour of labor. The part was $225, and the labor was $150, not cheap, but seemed fair to me. He also offered to talk with my husband by phone if he had any questions. We would hire Cuddy Brothers again, and are happy that we found a local plumber to work with.
This is an A+++ company. I had no heat during the frigid temperatures in Boston on Friday, February, 20th, 2015. I received The Cuddy Brother's name through a friend's recommendation and immediately looked them up on Angies's List. An A listing prompted me to call them along with several other calls placed to other plumbing/HVAC contractors. Chris Cuddy called me back Saturday morning within 20 minutes (I began my calls before 8am as I huddled in 40 house temps). He said he'd be over in 30 minutes once he was done with another job! The other companies said they would be able to arrive by end of next week - I did not sleep the entire night as I worried about frozen pipes so this was not an option. He and his worker was very easy to speak with, efficient with diagnosing my heating issue (ignition switch) and had the furnace back to running that morning. I couldn't have been happier! I felt that the price was very fair given that this was an emergency call and I appreciated that he came the same day recognizing the emergency need which allowed me to avoid damage from potential pipes bursting. I would absolutely recommend this company based on this weekend's experience and interaction with them. Chris Cuddy and his employee did not "upsell" me during such an emergency situation which I appreciated. I found them to be honest, straightforward and efficient.
I thought my disposal had died and would need replacement. One of Cuddy's plumbers showed up promptly, despite snowy streets, and got it going with a couple of simple moves; he would only accept payment for his time and the trip. He also showed me what to do if the situation recurs. Considering that he could have sold me a new disposal and made a lot more money, I appreciated his ethical choice in doing the repair and then showing me how to deal with it in future.
Fast, friendly and efficient service. Spoke with Chris at 8:30 a.m., two plumbers were here by 9:30 a.m. They went out and purchased a new garbage disposal and installed it - got everything quickly working again. Even checked an issue with our water heater (above and beyond the reason for the original call...). Highly recommend!
