Writing in March 2022, he called Joe Trainor the most punctual, accountable and cooperative contractor he had worked with in several countries. Another architect, in October 2020, said two completed projects were among the very best residential construction jobs he had been involved in, and singled out budget transparency and paperwork.
This is a Framingham firm doing high-end MetroWest and Boston work, run by Joe and Andrew Trainor, and its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration #161538 is active. The permit record backs up the scale: 33 permitted projects, typically around $36,000 but running to a $415,000 whole-house remodel in Newton Center, a $306,000 kitchen-and-exterior job in Stow, and a $260,000 kitchen, bath and carpentry project in Brookline. BuildZoom's score of 104 puts it above 91 percent of Massachusetts contractors.
The work people describe is the hard kind. A homeowner writing in March 2022 had three-quarters of a house restored after a fire, with insurance delays, no architect and no plans — only an insurer's scope — and said the team was patient about finding out what they actually wanted and offered options rather than defaults. Another, in October 2020, described being advised before the purchase, consulted on structural issues, coached through their own DIY and then handed properly-managed subcontractors. A Boston property manager of thirty years' standing wrote that his unit owners had used them on Commonwealth Avenue for twelve-plus years, on deck rebuilds, window replacements and masonry repairs.
Two things to weigh. First, the written record is dated: Houzz shows 5.0 across 85 ratings, but the thirteen accounts anyone actually wrote run 2017 to 2022, so nothing describes how the firm works now. Second, even the praise carries one qualification — a 2022 reviewer noted it was occasionally challenging to get a response during that pandemic-delayed fire restoration. Houzz also gives the licence only as 'MA CSL' with no number, and BuildZoom lists four older City of Newton builder registrations, #8829 and #88819, as inactive and at one point cancelled; the state registration is the one that is current.
For a large renovation in Newton, Brookline, Weston or Framingham where drawings, budgets and subcontractor coordination matter as much as the finish, this is a serious outfit with the permit trail to prove it — and a typical job cost Houzz puts at $200,000 upward on a cost-plus basis, which tells you who it is for. Ask what a comparable job cost in the last year, confirm the registration is current, and ask for two or three 2026 references, because the written record stops in 2022.
