Two very different companies show up when you look into DCR. The one the reviews are about is DCR Building & Remodeling — a Lynnfield sole proprietorship, owner David Rugato, which the Better Business Bureau says opened on 7/7/1992 and lists at seven employees. The one answering the phone now is DCR Construction LLC: the company's own site, on the same number, describes a North Shore general contractor working out of Middleton on additions, kitchen and bathroom remodels, decks, porches and mill work.
Rugato's own account is that he started contracting in 1992 after a Wentworth Institute of Technology degree in building and construction with an architectural-engineering concentration, that the business is 34 years old, and that it is veteran owned and operated. The stated territory is Lynnfield, Saugus, Wakefield, Peabody and Middleton.
The written history is warm, and it is old. Four homeowners wrote at length in 2019 about bathrooms and kitchens: one couple had a full and a half bath gutted down to the drain pipes, worked around a dog and three small children, and singled out the nightly cleanup — nails vacuumed, the toilet reset at the end of every working day. Another, writing in July 2019, said Dave had handled small and large jobs for them across ten years, including a complete kitchen renovation, and called him patient and detail-oriented. In April 2019 a basement bathroom came in at a price that reviewer liked and finished above expectations. The last kind word is a Houzz five-star from August 2023, for a kitchen and bathroom done with help picking finishes and fixtures.
Then the tone breaks. In June 2026 a customer who hired the company for a bedroom-and-bath addition posted on Houzz, and again on Angi and HomeAdvisor, that the job was botched, the money was kept, they lost in arbitration, and the company is declaring bankruptcy. That is one customer's telling, not something confirmed here. But BBB points the same way: its Lynnfield page carries a single alert, "Out-of-Business known or suspected", and shows the firm as Not Rated for that reason. The platform headlines have not caught up — Angi and HomeAdvisor still average 4.2 from five ratings, four of them from 2019.
So the question to settle before any money moves is which business you would actually be hiring. Ask whose name goes on the contract, get that entity's current Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration and insurance certificates in writing, ask directly about the arbitration and the bankruptcy the June review describes, and structure payments so you are never far ahead of the work.
