Five Google ratings, four written reviews, and every one of them posted in 2018 — that is the entire public trail behind a builder that says it has been working since 1995. Devaney Building Corp runs out of 1248 Route 28A in Cataumet, on the Bourne side of the canal, and describes itself as a general building contractor that plans and builds residential, commercial and industrial projects alongside outside designers, architects and subcontractors. The company names Don Devaney as its principal and credits him with almost 40 years in the trade; by its own count the business itself is 31 years old. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active and held in the company's own name. What customers wrote, they wrote eight years ago. In March 2018 one homeowner called the work beautiful and finished on time; another said they would hire Devaney again; a third that June wrote about the quality of the construction and renovation work and about being dealt with straight. A fourth 2018 reviewer thanked the family for what they had put into Cape Cod. Uniformly positive — and uniformly old. The corroboration outside those four reviews is professional rather than customer-side: a Falmouth architecture practice lists Devaney Building Corp as the contractor on its residential work. That is the shape of the business the reviews and the company's own description both point toward — architect-drawn houses on the Upper Cape rather than quick service calls. So the useful question here is not whether the work was good in 2018; it reads that way. It is what the last few years look like, and only the company can answer that. Ask for jobs closed in the past year or two and for the homeowners' phone numbers, and ask which architects they are currently building for. An active registration and an architect-side portfolio make this a reasonable first call for a custom build or a substantial renovation near Falmouth and Bourne — just plan on doing the reference-checking yourself, because the public trail stops well short of today.
