When the Falmouth Historic Districts Commission refused a certificate of appropriateness for renovations to the Frances Nye property in North Falmouth, Good Builders took it to court: a 2007 filing sets out the appeal, brought by the company together with Alan King. That is the end of the market this builder works in. The company operates from Chester Street in North Falmouth and describes itself as a Cape Cod custom home builder and remodeler, doing ground-up custom homes, additions, renovations, and the site preparation and excavation that comes first. By its own account it began when Stephen Good finished his first spec home in 1987, spent its early years in land development, and turned toward custom home building after a Falmouth project in the late 1990s; it reports 39 years in business. It is family-run, on its own telling: Stephen Good is president and owner, and his son Jake Good is project and operations manager. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #118403, is active on the state registry in the company's name. The Better Business Bureau grades the company A+ and lists one employee with Stephen Good as the contact, on a profile that is not accredited. This is the owner-run end of custom building on the Upper Cape: one name on the registration, a second generation in the office, and work that runs from a new house down to an addition. If your project sits inside a historic district, ask them about that 2007 case and how they handle the certificate process now. Ask as well for addresses of recent Cape builds you can drive past, and settle scope, allowances and the schedule in writing before signing.
