JA Mechanical is a Wakefield HVAC shop that says it's been installing and servicing central air, heating and heat pump systems since 1990 — a family-owned operation, according to its own site, serving Wakefield and Revere along with the wider Essex, Middlesex and Suffolk county area. Its current Massachusetts HVAC license is active, verified against the state registry. That's worth noting because BuildZoom's separate permit-history profile flags a different, older Newton HVAC/Mechanical Contractor license, #426, as expired since 2018 and a Newton sheet-metal contractor record as cancelled — a stale read that doesn't match the currently active state license. The written record is mixed. On Google, a review from August 2025 described a same-day response, an honest diagnosis, and a technician who suggested topping off refrigerant rather than pushing a costly compressor replacement — a call that held up and, the reviewer said, saved money. But a review from December 2025 told a different story: two systems installed, one of which hasn't worked properly since, with repeated calls that went unreturned. A 2023 Reddit comment in r/boston described a similar pattern — a heat pump installation that failed within 14 months with no follow-up service. BuildZoom's permit history backs up real installation work beyond reviews: complete Carrier central air conditioning installs in Milton and Topsfield, ductwork for two systems in Cambridge, a new HVAC system in Revere, and jobs in Melrose, Weston and Woburn, though only 2 of its 14 tracked permits fall in the past three years. Given a verified active license and a genuine install record, but more than one account of an installed system going bad and going unaddressed, it's worth asking directly about warranty and follow-up service terms before booking a full system installation here.
“My heat pump was installed by J A Mechanical. Incompetent dipshits whose work broke down in 14 months and refused to even look at the system.”
Installed 2 systems for us and one of them hasn’t worked properly since it was installed. We have called multiple times and they won’t even return our phone calls. Terrible service.
Professional service, honest assessment and fair pricing. We were fortunate that they were able to respond and send someone over the same day. Professional, knowledgeable, systematically diagnosed and resolved the problem. Even though my compressor is getting old, they didn't try to scare me into buying and installing a new compressor; they presented an option (top off the refrigerant), explained why it might be a viable solution (no evidence of leaks), and see if that would work first. So far it has, and that probably saved us some money - especially since their pricing was fair. We will definitely call them the next time we have an HVAC issue and when we need to eventually replace our compressor.
J A mechanical appreciate it you are the best stuff in the United States😘
