Call at 3:30 on a winter afternoon with a leaking hot water tank and you may have a new one by nine the next morning. That is what one homeowner laid out in a February 2026 review — Joey on the phone that afternoon, Scott and Evan at the door before nine. Emergency heat and hot water is the through-line at James Thompson Plumbing and Heating. The shop works out of Woburn and says it has served the area since 1996, with more than 30,000 plumbing and heating jobs behind it. Its BBB page lists a five-employee sole proprietorship owned by James W. Thompson, started in January 1996, carrying an A+ grade without accreditation. The company advertises 24/7 service across Woburn, Medford, Burlington, Lexington, Reading, Wakefield, Winchester, Arlington, Cambridge and Somerville, and names itself a Navien wall-hung installer and Burnham boiler dealer. Google sits at 4.7 stars over 44 ratings, and the 31 reviews on file from 2021 through 2026 keep circling the same handful of jobs: water heaters, boilers, burst pipes, no-heat mornings. Seven of them were written in the last six months, all positive. Speed and explanation tend to arrive together — a July 2026 customer had a spigot fixed in under an hour and was not charged for the quote, and a January 2026 reviewer who woke to no heat was scheduled within the hour. In a 2025 review, a homeowner whose 40-year-old furnace was flagged during a water heater call wrote that the technician laid out the option without pushing, discounted doing both, and hauled the old units away. Price is the recurring thing to raise, and it cuts both ways. Several customers call the pricing fair, including a 2026 reviewer who had been quoted twice as much by a bigger name for the same boiler job, while a 2023 customer wrote it cost more than they had hoped and a 2021 three-star review said plainly to expect to be overcharged. The sharpest complaint is a 2024 one-star account: a $149 diagnostic fee charged during the booking call, an email receipt for a subscription to a differently named company, and then no technician that day. The right call when a water heater quits, a boiler dies mid-cold-snap, or a pipe lets go on a holiday — that is most of what people hire them for, and the recent write-ups are consistent about it. Before they dispatch, get the diagnostic fee, what it covers, and exactly what you are being charged for confirmed in writing.
Colin and Kyle were excellent in their services and manners. I needed a full sink vanity replacement and, even if the scheduling was a bit challenging in the beginning due to snow forecast, the service was great! The initial assessment visit was free of charge, quick but thorough. For the actual work, they disposed of my old vanity and sink, replaced the plumbing, installed the new sink and were communicative throughout the process. I have recommended them to friends and neighbors and I will definitely call them again!
Showed up quickly to our house to fix a spigot issue. They fixed it in less than an hour. They didn’t make us pay for the quote and their price was very affordable.
I was referred to James Thompson Plumbing about 3 years and my only regret working with them is that I was not aware of them 15 years ago when I bought my condo. Over the last 3 years I have used them often for repairs in my kitchen, guest bathroom, new water heater and most recently to replace the shut off valves for my washing machine hookup. Although none of the services were emergencies, Joey Thompson always returned my calls for service in less than an hour, and the services were provided within 24 hours. All of the work performed over the last 3 years has been exceptional! In addition to repairs, they provided the product, i.e., with a new water heater, new faucets, new toilet, new shutoff valves, etc. Their exceptional work is equaled by their exceptional customer service. They are fast, neat and demonstrate the highest degree of professionalism. Every time their technicians came to my home, they were on time, introducing themselves and shaking hands, get the job done, and on the way out shaking your hand again and saying thank you. They are polite, courteous and respectful and always a pleasure to work with. Although I wish I found James Thompson Plumbing 15 years ago, I'm happy I found them 3 years ago and they are the only plumbing contractors I will continue to use in the future. It is extremely rare to find any company and service these days that provides such exceptional work with such exceptional customer service, with such a high degree of professionalism. Thank you Mr. Thompson, as well as your family and entire team for such great work and experiences and I look forward to working with you in the future. Joe
5 stars….Had a water heater leak in a condo I own in another town. Great guys to do business with, Scott and Ethan were prompt, did a great job, and with a “no mess” install, The office responded to my call for help quickly. I can’t recommend this company enough - definitely will use Thompson Plumbing again in the future.
Excellent service! My call was answered immediately and highly competent team came out to fix broken valves. Great value also. I’m already working with them on upgrades to the water heater. Highly recommended.
