When another contractor walks off a job, Master Builders is the kind of outfit that gets called in to close it out. A 2023 Google reviewer described exactly that: the company took over an unfinished project, brought it in on budget and quickly, and kept the communication clear the whole way. The company works out of Malden with a Boston office, says on its own site that it has been at this since 2006 and has completed more than 1,000 remodeling projects around Boston, and describes itself as family-owned with the owner on site while the work is going on. What customers actually describe is the bigger-ticket end of residential work: a bedroom addition in 2024, and another 2024 reviewer who used them for a kitchen, a bathroom and an entire backyard with a wrap-around deck and patio walkway, calling the crew meticulous, timely and flexible about constant changes. Earlier jobs run to quartz countertops and marble tile in kitchens, both written up in 2022. Anderson's name shows up in half the reviews, usually as the person who walked through the options and kept people posted. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #186762, is active, and the Better Business Bureau gives the company an A+ — the same profile notes it is not BBB accredited. Google sits at 4.5 stars across 17 ratings. Two things to pin down before signing. Timing: a 2022 customer's front porch renovation ran three to four weeks past the estimate, and they rated the job two stars. Money: a different 2022 customer spent more than anticipated, while saying the work itself was done well. Pulling the other way, a 2022 reviewer got a quote thousands below two other contractors and had the job finish on time through rain delays. For a Boston-area homeowner planning an addition, a full kitchen, or a porch or deck build — especially one that needs picking up where someone else stopped — this is a reasonable call. Get the schedule and the change-order terms in writing before anyone starts, and check registration #186762 on the state register yourself.

I have worked with Master builders on several home renovations, including finishing a kitchen, remodeling a bathroom and an entire backyard with wrap around deck and patio walkway. Anderson and his team were meticulous timely and extremely flexible with my constant changes. I could not be happier with the work that was performed and I will definitely use Master builders again in the future.

Very good experience
I'd give 4 1/2 stars if possible, but not the full five. We hired MasterBuilders to replace our existing open side porch with an enclosed porch. It was a fairly small job so we had a somewhat difficult time finding someone to take it on. Anderson from MasterBuilders was immediately responsive when we reached out to him for this. He came by almost right away, had very good, solid ideas of what the project required, and his quote was extremely reasonable. He also gave us really good feedback regarding the question of if we wanted the porch heated or not. (We decided on not, because it would have greatly raised the cost, but also because Anderson was correct that with the insulation, it would work as what we needed for our purposes.) He said it would probably take two to three weeks for the project, which I knew enough to calculate out to really mean likely six weeks. We were okay with that - it was a small enough project that we knew it was going to be fitted in between other ones. He started the work quickly, and the tear-down of the old porch was done in the first week. Things got slower after that, but still moved along fairly steadily, a bit at a time. The general structure was up pretty quickly, and we were extremely pleased with Anderson's vision - the way the roof was constructed worked very well with the existing roof of the house, the stairs and materials were all of good quality, and the guys doing the work were very diligent and polite. I will say that the project did slow down greatly at that point. Weather definitely had a part in that - it was extremely rainy for a while there - but the final items (moving a doorbell, which would have been better done much earlier in the project, but wasn't done until the very end, despite repeated reminders on our end, installing a ceiling light, doorknob, and drain spouts) took three more weeks and a lot of follow-ups for the project to be completed. I do want to make it clear that Anderson was immediately responsive every time we reached out - I think he responded to any text we sent within two minutes! - which I much appreciated. But there would often be a lag of days at a time between when he said someone would show up to do the work, and when that actually happened. Not the biggest deal in the world, and the work would eventually get done, but just a note, so you can set expectations with regard to communication. I would have liked more communication from Anderson's side, but I also want to make it clear that at the end, every part of the project was completed to our satisfaction. All in all, the project took eight weeks and a day. The end result is truly phenomenal and I really do believe that Anderson's design work was ideal. The porch looks like it's always been there, and we are absolutely thrilled to have the new space for coats and shoes and dog stuff. We went with Master Builders in order to finish off a project that our original contractor left. They came in and took over and were able to complete it coming in on budget and very quickly. Communication over project details was great, as we got responses to requests within a day, and usually an expert on site within a week of making a request. Overall we will be looking to use Master Builders in the future for other home projects and recommending them to friends and family.
