A small Needham plumbing and heating shop with a long history and a very short review trail. The company says Frank McDonnell founded it in 1984, that his daughter Kate Tynan learned the trade from him, and that it has been family owned and operated ever since. BBB counts five employees. The customer writing is thin but consistent. Google shows 4.3 stars from 11 ratings with three written reviews behind it, and the useful one is a 2023 toilet job: the crew found the problem wasn't only a clog but also a leak, fixed both, and the homeowner said they would keep calling the local shop — while adding that the price ran a little high and that they'd have liked clearer word on when the truck would arrive. Another 2023 reviewer, who had used them several times by then, called the work thorough and said you notice how much they care about it. The newest, from March 2026, is two words: "Best around." More is visible around the business than inside its reviews. A trade publication reported in 2022 that Kate Tynan received PHCC of MA's Contractor of the Year award, and a 2017 local news item noted her appointment to that association's board; a 2025 Patch article covered an apprentice at the company winning a PHCC of MA scholarship. That is standing inside the trade rather than homeowner testimony, but it is the kind of thing a shop this old accumulates. Its Better Business Bureau page is an A+, with no complaints or government actions published, though the business is not BBB-accredited. Two things worth settling on the phone, both raised by that one detailed 2023 review: what the visit will cost, and what arrival window you're actually getting. Neither came with a horror story attached — the customer still said they'd hire them again — but they're the specifics a first-time caller should pin down. The right call for everyday repairs, heating, gas work and water heaters around Needham and the Boston metro-west area the company says it covers, particularly if you'd rather deal with a five-person family shop than a dispatch operation. Go in knowing the public review trail is short enough that you're leaning on four decades of tenure and an A+ BBB page more than on what past customers have written down.

Tynan joined the family business in 2005 and was taught by father Frank how to repair and diagnose plumbing and heating systems.”

Best around..
Have used McDonnell Plumbing & Heating several times. They are always very thorough and you notice how much they care about their work.
They repaired my toilet clogging. They identified it was not only a clogging problem but also a toilet leakage. The service is a little expensive, but I acknowledge that we solved my problem. I would suggest a better communication on the time of arrival. This review is based on my most recent service on September 2023. I would say that they have done a better job compared with before. There is room for improvement (I might rate 4.5 if I could), but as a local plumbing business I will probably continue to choose their service again.
