N.E.T.R. built a strong reputation over decades doing heat pump and mini-split installs across the North Shore and Greater Boston — 4.9 stars across 1,740 Google ratings, an A+ BBB file going back to 2014, and 874 reviews on file since 2017. But in 2024 the company was acquired by Sila Heating and Air, a private-equity-backed HVAC platform, and a striking number of independent voices — Google reviewers, Reddit commenters, and a detailed HomeAdvisor account — describe the acquisition as a turning point. The older record is genuinely strong. In a 2017 review, a homeowner with 35 years in construction called it an extremely well-run company from the first phone call on. A 2024 review describes a full heat pump system installed in a single day on a job the reviewer had seen take up to five elsewhere; another 2024 review describes a technician methodically tracing a sagging condensate line to its actual cause. Multiple 2022-2024 Reddit threads describe N.E.T.R. coming in below competitors like Sila and New England Ductless on Mitsubishi mini-split quotes, and handling the Mass Save rebate process entirely in-house. The recent record tells a different story. A May 2026 HomeAdvisor review describes a $107,000 heat pump install on a triple-decker quoted at two months that took eight, after an electrical design that violated Somerville's setback code forced a full redesign and a seven-week utility resubmission delay. Several recent Google reviews describe customer service that 'completely disintegrated' — ghosted maintenance appointments, unreturned calls, and blown-off service visits from a company reviewers say was previously responsive. One recent review describes repeated return visits for a leak and a $5,000 quote to install a manufacturer-warrantied part, which the reviewer attributes directly to 'since they were bought out by Sila.' A 2024 Reddit thread describes a condenser upgrade quoted at roughly $24,000 against a wholesale cost of about $6,000, and a recent Reddit comment names the private-equity ownership itself as a reason to avoid the company. A 2025 review describes a water leak from an incorrect installation that went unresolved across three visits, causing ceiling and insulation damage. Given a well-earned reputation built over years set against a real, multiply-corroborated decline since the 2024 acquisition, get a firm price and timeline in writing, ask directly whether N.E.T.R.'s own crew or a Sila crew will handle the job, and give extra scrutiny to the contract terms on any large or complex installation.
“Yes. They’re owned by Goldman Sachsl. NETR and 128 Plumbing are also PE owned and should be avoided”
“I just used NETR to install a heat pump. Good install. Very responsive. I’d hire them again.”
“I used NETR, they were the only company out of 3 that was able to work with me vs having me go back to oil which I was looking to avoid. I believe before rebates it was around $18k for 3 indoor units? That was back in ‘21, pricing may have changed since then. They did also do a great job working for and con”
“if you *had* to go with a big HVAC contractor, N.E.T.R. is solid. They could be really hit or miss close to Cambridge/Somerville though - someone in LC (our quote-sharing group) said N.E.T.R. quoted $30K for ductless 4 heads & 2 condensers!”
“Have used NETR twice. They came in about 7-8k below Sila and New England Ductless (the most expensive) and about 2k over a cheaper local contractor. Good customer service and they now handle the rebate process 100% on their own, including the rebate in the quote and recovering the money on their own.”
“Sila Heating and Air, the Dubin Clark‑backed residential HVAC and home services platform, completed add-on acquisitions of N.E.T.R. Inc. (North Andover, MA) and John S. Parker Home Services (Kingston, NY).”
Repair Service was performed well and efficiently, service personnel were friendly and found all the problems and created solutions, very impressed by that. Tony was friendly and professional and efficient and a joy to meet.
After having the best experience with the installation when I started with N.E.T.R. a few years ago, apparently their customer service has completely disintegrated. They offer an Early Bird Maintenance / Tune-Up Special in the spring, but then never honor the appointment. They don't even have the courtesy to call and cancel the appointment, they just leave you hanging all day. And they still haven't called to reschedule two weeks later! Just ghosted me. It sounds like N.E.T.R. has been bought out or something and SILA is letting everyone down so far. Not sure what to do now. Posting this as a warning to others that the N.E.T.R. name no longer seems to stand for anything. My dealings with N.E.T.R. deserve a Wow! They were incredible, from initial estimate and quote, to communication, to installation. They responded so promptly and were able to install in such a short time. The team of Alberto and Max was the best. They were so friendly, polite and professional. The job was done in less than a full day, they left the area clean, and took a lot of time explaining everything about the units and remote. Can't say enough about this positive experience. Thank you, N.E.T.R.!
Tony was very knowledgeable and patient
Install was great but they have had to come 4-5 times to find and repair leaks. Since they were bought out by Sila the prices are sky high. They just found a leak in a head unit that was covered by mfg warranty but want $5000 to install the piece...we are not happy with the situation.
He was very helpful and thoughtful
