Almost every review of this shop is about the same thing: railings. North Shore Iron Work is a cutting-and-welding operation on Hilldale Ave in Haverhill that fabricates custom wrought iron in-house — handrails and stair railings above all, plus gates, fences, balconies, stairs, fire escapes and structural steel for homes and commercial jobs. The owner says he learned the trade from his father, a welder-fabricator, and puts the shop at just over ten years. The review record is unusually uniform: 5 stars across 60 Google ratings, 4.9 across 32 on Thumbtack, running back to 2021, with nothing negative in the last six months. What customers describe is a process more than a personality — someone comes out and measures, an estimate follows, the piece is fabricated, then a crew installs it. Speed comes up a lot. One homeowner this July needed a job done inside a week to close a house sale and got it, at a price they said matched quotes from other fab shops in the area. Another described long runs of railing on a large job delivered under a compressed timeline, on the days promised and on budget. A Thumbtack customer in May credited Dave with fabricating, installing and repairing several hand railings plus a fire escape rail, and with explaining the process and timing clearly. Two things worth sorting out before you call. This is a small operation — Thumbtack lists five employees — so any sizeable job shares the shop's fabrication queue; ask where yours would sit and what the install date actually is. And the welding credentials you'll see quoted (welders trained at Wentworth) come from the shop's own description rather than a registry, so read them as its claim, not a verified one. If what you want is custom ironwork — a railing matched to an existing one, a fire escape, an iron gate or fence — this is a shop with a long, steady record of exactly that. Book the measurement visit, then get the lead time and install date in writing before fabrication starts.

These guys are great. Very professional and were able to help me in a pinch to complete a project I needed done in less then a week to sell a home. Pricing was on point with other quotes I got from a few other fab shops in the area. Will definitely use again.

What does a fence cost in Greater Boston?
Typical Greater Boston range for this kind of work, from regional averages — not a quote from North Shore IronWork. Use it to sanity-check bids, then get the real number in writing.
Walk the line and pace it off — a pace is about 3 feet.
Estimated range
$4,050 – $7,950
Typical fencing project around $6,000
