Rutland Turfcare & Pest Control works out of Marlborough, splitting its work between lawn fertilization and weed control on one side and pest calls — wasp and hornet nests, ants, rodents, ticks and mosquitoes — on the other. It carries an unusually large review base: 4.8 stars across 464 Google ratings, another 4.8 from HomeAdvisor's 153, and 4.9 from Angi's 38. This spring brought two of the more detailed recent reads. One Angi customer on an annual plan wrote she's seen zero ant sightings since Rutland's first visit and that the company also cleared a hornet's nest that showed up near her deck along with interior and exterior rodent activity. A HomeAdvisor reviewer the same month described technicians as careful and considerate with both the home and the lawn, calling the whole crew knowledgeable. That pattern runs deeper than this season. Reviews through 2024 and 2025 repeatedly describe a multi-year weed turnaround after other "spray and leave" lawn services failed to keep up — grass going from thin and weedy to thick and green over a year or two of treatment — alongside a recurring same-day response to active wasp and hornet nests, sometimes arriving within the hour of a photo or a call. The clearest current complaint is about renewal. An April 2026 Google review accuses the company of continuing lawn service into a new season under a "continuous from season to season" clause the customer says was buried in the fine print — a complaint echoed by an earlier 2025 review describing a spring treatment showing up after the customer believed the account was already cancelled. Results aren't universal, either: a January 2026 review reports weeds that never cleared up along with a confusing billing withdrawal, and a February 2026 Angi review says a technician couldn't pin down where rats were getting into a home over the winter. Scheduling has also slipped for at least one customer — a 2025 HomeAdvisor review describes two treatments arriving roughly a month late — and a 2024 reviewer asking for a single emergency ant visit got a terse reply questioning their loyalty rather than a straight answer. For an active nest or a lawn that other companies couldn't turn around, the response time and multi-year weed results are the strongest reasons to call. Before signing on, it's worth asking directly how the season-to-season renewal and cancellation actually work — that's where the real friction shows up.
very professional and thorough
I've had Rutland for a couple of years at this point and signed on to their anual service. I have had Absolutely zero ant sitings since they came the first time. They also managed exterior and interior rotent activity very well. When a hornet's nest appeared in a tree by the deck they promptly and expertly removed this at no extra cost above the anual service. The crew is always prompt and professional, and their work is guaranteed, althgouh I have never needed to call them back for an issue outside of the hornet's nest.
I am so happy with their service. I feel like they are so careful and considerate to treat our home and lawn very special. All the technicians that have come to treat our lawn have been kind and knowledgeable. Our lawn looks beautiful!!
Buyer Beware!! If you are looking for lawn care/pest control…stay far AWAY from Rutland TurfCare and Pest Control. I admit, I missed the fine print stating that “our service is continuous from season to season for your convenience”. Honestly, I had no intention of continuing the service and did not reach out to cancel. Didn’t really think I had so since I was a pre-pay client and did not receive anything in writing. However, they came right over last week to treat my lawn. Here is my issue: Last season we requested calls prior to treatment as I have special needs dogs that need scheduled break times since they are not mobile. That request was ignored more than once…and there was no call this time either. Now there is a balance that I owe, and I will pay but I need to let others know that the fine print definitely needs to be read….I had to go back to my original receipt from 3/14/25 to read this. So shady…and the fact that they don’t follow simple directions…a phone call prior to treatment…speaks loudly of their sloppiness. For the record, we use Ransford Pest Control and they are outstanding!! They always manage to call before coming out. REPLY TO OWNER RESPONSE - I appreciate you taking the time to respond. I will not be calling directly as I have already done that. If you really cared about this review, you would have reached out to me. I guess we can agree to disagree. My husband has no records of phone calls...and I would be willing to show phone records. Could not find any emails nor do I recall a letter. As for automatically renewing...I am a cash pay ahead client. My records show that fact. At this point, I have paid my bill because $72.00 is well worth it for me to not have to deal with your business ever again.
Rutland may be good at some things, but did not seem to have the knowledge or techniques to control rats, especially when the rats had moved inside for the winter. They were unable or unwilling to find where the rodents were entering the home, and missed at least two entry points. After waiting 3 weeks with zero results to show for the money we'd spent, I hired another company. They proposed a clear plan that explained the course of their treatment, which has followed their time-line. Rats are hard to eliminate once they get inside a home. But nothing Rutland did would have eliminated them. In fact, because they did nothing to seal the home, we could have been feeding new animals forever. A lot of wasted time, anxiety, and money.
