Star Construction — now doing business as Star Remodeling — is a Groveland outfit with roots that go back to 1958, when Michael "Mike" Caravas founded it as Star Builders & Painters in Burlington. By its own account the company has moved through Woburn and West Newbury before landing in Groveland, and today it's run by Bob Williams, who started as a laborer under Caravas and became his partner in the late 1970s. The company's Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, however, is registry-verified expired. What the reviews describe is a business built around Bob himself managing the work directly. In a recent review, first-time homebuyers hired him to divide a room in two and called the process transparent and honest, including a change order that went smoothly, with Bob present on-site every day either working himself or overseeing subcontractors. In a 2025 review describing a 2nd-floor remodel done in 2023, a customer said Bob walked them through their first remodel and gave clear, timely updates while managing supply-chain delays. Two reviews from early 2022 point to a longer relationship: one described Star handling major renovations twice on the same income property, praising communication, estimate accuracy and scheduling; another described Bob as helpful and prompt even when a prospective client turned out to be outside the service area, offering a trusted referral instead of just turning her away. On Houzz, the company's project galleries and design-build listings run $5,000 to $200,000 in typical job cost, and it carries several NARI and Chrysalis awards for kitchen, exterior, and addition work — though that profile lists a separate Construction Supervisor license number that hasn't been independently verified here. The lapsed home improvement contractor registration is worth asking about directly before signing a contract, especially for a project of any real size. Otherwise, the pattern across more than a decade of reviews — attentive communication, honest pricing, and Bob staying hands-on through the job — is consistent.
As first time homebuyers we met with a fair number of contractors and Bob was definitely the right choice. Our project was a pretty small job of dividing a room in two. His process was transparent and honest. We had a change order and that process was smooth as well. Bob started right on time and was present everyday either doing the work himself or working with the subs. We are happy with the quality and craftsmanship. Would definitely recommend working with Bob.
We hired Bob and crew for a 2nd floor remodel project in 2023 and were very pleased with the process. This was our first remodel and Bob walked us through every step. He also gave us clear and timely updates on managing and working around supply chain issues. We hope to use them again if we can ever afford a kitchen remodel!
Searching for a firm to do a kitchen gut renovation, I reached out to Star Construction among a number of companies. Bob Williams was no only prompt in letting me know that I was out of the current service area, he gave me a referral of a company he trusts and further answered a lot of my questions regarding how to find the best company with whom to partner. After having a nightmare experience with a bathroom remodel, I feel more at ease knowing there are companies and tradesmen who are focused on good communication and helping clients find the best option for them. I commend Bob Williams on his customer service: attentiveness to my inquiry, helpful resources and time. Now to just find this in my area!
It is with pleasure that we whole heartedly recommend the services of Star Construction, its owner Bob Williams, his crew, and range of subcontractors. Star has worked with us several times, twice for major renovations of income property we own. We have each time been impressed with the ease of communication, attention to detail, estimate accuracy, and scheduling. Bob is deeply knowledgeable, dedicated to open dialogue and quality workmanship from a project's beginning to its completion. Bob carefully manages his team of carpenters and subcontractors and keeps the project moving on time and within budget. He always discussed unexpected difficulties and made sure changes we requested were clearly understood. For the most recent renovation, Star was contracted to do all the major tasks involved in a complete redo of the kitchen, bath, and back entranceway. When we were unexpectantly not able to complete a significant number of smaller tasks we had planned to do ourselves, Bob and his crew stepped in, working days, evenings, and some weekends, to make sure the apartment was ready in time for the new tenant. They went above and beyond and for that we are forever grateful. We were also impressed with the subcontractors Bob involved in our project, all providing the highest quality of workmanship: Fairview Millwork of Seabrook; Elm Park Flooring of Groveland; Main Street Plumbing of Groveland; Joel Winslow/JW Electric of Atkinson; and Roger Dardinski, iron works, of Newburyport.
