Coolock Construction is David McGrath's Boston-based remodeling and general contracting outfit, and its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration checks out against the state registry as active. The written record backs that up: 11 reviews spanning 2019 through this year describe a wide range of work — a new roof in Back Bay, a kitchen ceiling and wall rebuilt after a burst-pipe flood, an AC return vent installed with enough care that David thought to match the drywall paint before the customer even asked, a deck build this spring. What comes through repeatedly is responsiveness and follow-through rather than just finished work. One customer, four years into working with him by the time of their review, describes David as willing to fix problems 'even if it's on the weekend or over a holiday,' and lists having hired him across bathroom, kitchen, roofing, closets, staircases, painting, electrical, plumbing and windows — a track record with one contractor across a genuinely wide range of trades. Another describes a rush job — sound and air sealing work involving tearing open walls, spray foam, drywall and painting — finished in four days with daily photo updates. Houzz backs the review record with a 2x Best of Houzz award and perfect 5.0 sub-scores for work quality, communication and value across its own eight reviews, plus a 'Verified License' badge (no number shown there). The BBB grades the company A+, though it isn't BBB-accredited — a real distinction, not a discrepancy, since accreditation and grade are separate BBB measures. One thing to note: the address and phone on file with Houzz (Boston's Back Bay) differ from the ones BBB has on record (East Walpole) — likely just an older or secondary listing rather than anything to worry about, but worth a quick confirmation when reaching out. For a homeowner in Boston's inner neighborhoods looking for a general contractor who handles everything from a roof to a bathroom to a rush repair, Coolock's record — verified license plus years of specific, corroborated praise — is about as solid as this kind of small operation gets.
David is that rare contractor who is not only a great builder but is super responsive and a pleasure to deal with. He was wonderful throughout our deck building project.
Amazing experience with Coolock Construction! Just like magic, they took care of my project with very little notice, were very patient, and worked quickly with the greatest quality. Highly recommended!
Great experience with Dave and his team. Dave and his team repaired our kitchen ceiling and an interior wall after a broken pipe caused significant water damage. Dave was a good communicator (clear on when the project would start and finish), ensured good workmanship and made sure that his team left the jobsite clean / livable for my family. I would hire Coolock again without hesitation - they are sensational!
Amazing work done in a tight time frame. David and his team at Coolock Construction were all very dedicated to getting their work done properly and in a timely fashion. David and each of his employees were very professional and very easy to deal with. There were no time lapses at all between parts of the renovations. David is a pleasure to deal with, and is constantly checking on the work being done. I am so very happy with my renovations, and would absolutely contact Coolock Construction for any future work to be done in my home. I would highly recommend David and Coolock Construction.
I hired David- Coolock Construction four years ago to do work in my condo in the South End... and it was by far the BEST decision! He is as kind and genuine as they come! These are rare qualities. He stands by the work he does, regardless of the size of the project. He is willing to work within your budget and goes the extra mile to fix any problem you be having, even if it's on the weekend or over a holiday. His skills are expansive: bathroom, kitchen, roof work, building closets, staircases, painting, electrical, plumbing, windows, etc. I have hired him, referred him and asked him for his advice more times than I can keep track of... and I'll continue to do so!!!
