Countryside Painting is a Somerville outfit run by John Kearns, who the company's site says has been doing this for 25-plus years — and stays personally on-site supervising the crew job to job. Every quoted review across Google, Houzz, and Reddit is five stars, spanning 2021 through 2025, and its Massachusetts home improvement contractor license comes back verified active. The thing that comes up again and again isn't just the paint job — it's the site discipline around it. In a 2024 review, a customer described John checking about any additions before starting, keeping the yard clean with no smoking or music, and thorough lead-safe protection while scraping old paint. In a 2021 review, a homeowner described the crew protecting neighbors' cars and bikes from splatter and cleaning up daily. More than once, the job included real carpentry alongside the paint: a 2021 review described scraping old paint and replacing damaged clapboards before priming and finishing, and a 2023 review described wood repairs to a porch as part of an exterior job. Communication shows up as a consistent thread too — in a 2021 review, one customer called John "an excellent communicator and project manager" who set expectations and distributed a written plan with dates and prep instructions; several others describe him responding quickly to estimate requests and giving color advice. A handful of reviewers are repeat customers, including one who came back for a second job and another who used Countryside twice for interior work alone. A 2024 Reddit thread in r/Somerville also names them as a go-to for indoor and outdoor painting. There's nothing negative in the written record to flag — no bad reviews, no BBB complaints (its BBB page shows an A+ rating, though it isn't BBB-accredited), and no licensing issues. Countryside is a strong pick for an exterior repaint, especially on an older or multi-unit property where site care and coordinating with neighbors matters, and for interior work where a stable, same-crew setup is worth something. Get a detailed written estimate up front, but the process itself, by every account here, runs smoothly.
“For indoor (and outdoor) painting, we've used Countryside Painting”
Countryside, headed by John Kearns, did a terrific job on the exterior of the big old Victorian in which I have a condo. It involved working with all six owners in the building, balancing special requests and many questions. His workers were quiet, professional, and hard-working. We've gotten a lot of positive feedback. Highly recommended.
My parents had them paint the exterior of their house in somerville and were so impressed they recommend them to me when I needed to get my house painted. John was super responsive and the painters were so efficient and thorough. I would recommend them to anyone looking for a painter!
I reached out to John to get my condo repainted, he responded quickly and was able to provide an estimate and plenty of advice on colors and what was worth doing or not doing. Once we decided to move forward with John he was able to do the work very quickly and it looks great! Would absolutely use John for future painting projects!
I had a great experience having John Kearns and Countryside repaint the exterior of our Somerville three-story. The pricing was clear and they checked about any additions beforehand. They kept the yard clean, with no smoking/music, and thorough site protection from lead while scraping. John painted a number of samples of our red siding colors on the house so we could find the match we liked, and also took care of matching the cream and blue colors. He and the crew also made some recommendations (like painting the downspouts and adjusting the deck color to match the rest of the house better), but didn't press if I decided differently. They also identified areas that needed wood repair (fascia, siding, porch base) and did those very nicely, again with clear pricing ranges up front. The couple times I wasn't happy with something, they fixed it right away. There was a tricky spot to reach on a 3rd floor dormer, and when I called it out they went back and got it. And the crew scraped/prepped a railing that I had initially not asked to be repainted, but they just included it in the repainting without charging extra. They aren't cheap, but the quality of work and communication is excellent. I won't hesitate to contact John again.
This is the second time I've used Countryside, and they're great. Very efficient and talented crew and John is fantastic to work with - flexible in scheduling and fair in price. I had some siding repairs done mid November and they really came through to get my house painted before the weather got too cold.
