Cruz Companies works out of 280 Warren Street in Roxbury and is one of the oldest Black-owned construction and real estate enterprises in the country. John B. Cruz Jr. — known as Bertie, the son of Cape Verdean immigrants — started the John B. Cruz Construction Co. in 1948; the firm is now in its third generation under CEO John B. Cruz III, and describes itself as 100% Black-owned and 100% minority-owned across three divisions: the construction company, Cruz Development Corporation and Cruz Management Company. The important thing for anyone browsing a contractor directory is the size and shape of the work. This is not a firm that remodels kitchens. Procore lists John B. Cruz Construction as a general contractor of 51 to 100 employees with an average contract size above ten million dollars, 46 projects on that platform and 18 of them active, working across Massachusetts and Maryland in the commercial, institutional and residential sectors. The projects named in the trade press are buildings, not rooms: a ten-story mixed-use development at 135 and 145 Dudley with affordable rentals and market-rate condos, a 52-home affordable development called One Waverly, a 55-unit residential building, a former chain pharmacy being converted into a neighborhood supermarket in Roxbury. The firm's standing in its industry is well documented. Construction Executive listed John B. Cruz Construction among general contractors under $33 million; Engineering News-Record profiled the company's affordable-housing work; the Bay State Banner reported its recognition as one of Fast Company's "Brands That Matter"; and the Boston Preservation Alliance gave John Cruz and Cruz Companies its 2021 President's Award for Excellence. John Cruz has served as chairman of the Massachusetts chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors. Procore records the company as a certified Minority Business Enterprise. What is thin here is direct customer testimony. Google shows a 4.2-star average from ten ratings, but only two written accounts exist and both are old — a 2018 reviewer praised the upkeep of the properties and the company's standing in the Boston community, and a 2017 reviewer said the staff were good to work with and credited three generations of opportunity-building in Greater Boston. Neither describes a construction job. If you are a homeowner looking for someone to renovate your house, this is almost certainly not the right call — ask first whether they take work at your scale. If you are an owner, developer or institution putting up multifamily or mixed-use housing in Greater Boston, this is a firm with a long, well-documented record; ask for references on projects of comparable size and delivery method.
