Forty-four Google ratings averaging 4.7, and a lone one-star on Houzz — DeGeorge Home Improvements is a Boxford outfit whose read changes depending on which page you land on. Louis DeGeorge started the company in 2012, by its own account, and still runs it. What it markets is design-build remodeling on the North Shore — kitchens, bathrooms and finished basements for homeowners in Boxford, Georgetown, Topsfield, Rowley, Newburyport and West Newbury. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active against the state registry, and its Boxford BBB page carries an A+, though the company is not BBB accredited. The most detailed recent account comes from a homeowner who ran a full interior renovation through the company this July — plumbing, electrical, structural and finish work — who credited the subcontractors DeGeorge brought in and the follow-up on punch-list items after the crew left. That is the kind of job this company takes on: multi-trade projects in older houses where somebody has to sequence everyone. The counterweight is real. Across sixteen reviews reaching back to 2022 on seven different sites, the low-rated ones share a theme, and it is not the carpentry or the tile — they fault communication and schedule follow-through at the general-contractor level. Treat that as the thing to test before signing: get start and finish dates, the change-order process, and the name of whoever answers the phone mid-project written into the contract. Two smaller things worth keeping in proportion. The Houzz 1.0 rests on a single rating with no comment attached, so it should not outweigh the much deeper Google history behind it. And the Safe Contractor Approved and CRB Checked lines on the company's site, along with the Best of North Shore award shown on Houzz, are claims made by the company and that directory rather than anything verified here. If your project is a bathroom, kitchen or basement that needs several trades run under one contract, this is a reasonable outfit to put in the bidding — registered, long-established locally, with a mostly positive run of reviews behind it. Ask for references on jobs the size of yours, and pin the schedule down in writing first.

We did a full interior home reno with Louis's team including plumbing, electric, structural, and finish work. We were impressed with many of the subs he brought in along the way, and the team worked with us to address the various custom solutions our old home required. His coworker Matt was great at talking through each deliverable with us and getting into the nitty-gritty of what we were trying to accomplish. The team was proactive in suggesting high-leverage improvements that were not on our radar. Louis was responsive following up on punch list items, as well as minor issues that have come up as the house has "settled". They were not the cheapest bid, but we feel confident that they delivered quality work and they kept a clean job site. If you choose to use them for your home renovation, make sure you book in advance as quality contractors book out.

I hired Louis and his team on February 28, 2025 for a $70,000 basement renovation. The agreement was that work would begin by early May and finish by early June. Instead, work did not start until mid-June and the project was not completed until mid-September. During the project, there were several significant issues: 1. Thermostat buried – At one point, the team plastered over the thermostat and forgot it was there. This required corrective work that should not have been necessary. 2. Plastering problems – The plaster work was uneven and needed to be reskimmed, which their GC, Matt, acknowledged. When Louis came to inspect, he became visibly frustrated, blamed the painters who were not responsible, and attempted to sand the walls by hand to demonstrate a prep issue. He also made negative remarks about the other workers present. I later apologized to the painters to smooth things over. Ultimately, I had to negotiate a compromise to have the walls corrected properly. 3. HVAC access – Instead of installing the contracted access door, a low-cost plastic cover was installed. This did not meet standard practices for a project of this scope. I requested that this work be completed properly, but no action has been taken to date. 4. Flooding – The crew overloaded the electrical outlet connected to the HVAC condensate pump, which tripped the breaker. Since the breaker was not reset, the pump remained off over the weekend and the basement flooded. Louis attempted to make us pay for a plumber to diagnose the issue, even though it was clearly caused by how the work was left. 5. Pest infestation – After the project concluded, a cockroach problem appeared in the basement storage areas. These areas had not previously had issues. After consulting an exterminator, it was determined that the likely source was construction materials brought in during the project. When I raised the issue, Louis stated “Good luck proving it was my fault” and hung up on me. Some of the team members — Matt, Dave, and Junior — did solid work and were professional to deal with. However, Louis frequently did not take accountability, did not resolve issues professionally, and shifted responsibility to others. Bottom line: If you are considering this company, I recommend reviewing other options. While the project was eventually completed, the delays, extra costs, and handling of issues made this a stressful experience.

Louie and the team completed the renovation as promised and within estimated cost. His team works together well. They are all very responsive to my requests, and to any challenges that pop up during the project. A special shout out to Dave my project lead and Ronaldo who can do anything... and quickly too. My thanks goes out to the team. I will definitely consider them again in the future.

Subs are great--specifically plumbing and tile. However, communication and follow through very poor at the GC level by Louie. And don't even bother with the "interior designer" advertised at the sale of the job-- she doesn't return calls but finally sent a link via text to Home Depot fixtures without even setting foot on-site. Final project came out decent despite this, but only because of great subs, which is why I'm awarding a second star rather than a single one, but the overall experience from start to finish was stressful and lackluster despite the really charming sales pitch.

After two years of planning, and an extensive search for a general contractor that could suit our needs, we selected DeGeorge Home Improvements for our project. Our project was extensive, including a renovation of the entire second floor of our house, addition of 5 exterior dormers, new roof, master bedroom, master bath and a second full bathroom. This was not a project for the faint of heart or inexperienced! We contracted with Louis in Feb. of '23 and agreed upon a start date of/around end of the summer. We stayed in touch with Louis and followed through on his preparation recommendations. The project started on-time right after labor day and our first introductions to the DeGeorge team of workers and sub contractors began. To say that DeGeorge has put together an exceptional team is an understatement. Each sub contractor or employee was friendly, respectful and knowledgeable. They were great with my entire family, kids and pets! Louis's team made it a point to stay in communication throughout the project - answering all my questions, and texts (day and night) and ensuring I knew the schedule and next steps. Louis and his team made our 5 month project as painless as possible, accommodated our indecision at times, and allowed us to remain very much part of the project. The vision we had for our house was 10 years in the making. Louis and his team made it a reality and we couldn't be happier with the outcome. If you are seeking a knowledgeable contractor that can handle a larger, more complex project, do not hesitate to work with DeGeorge and his team!
