Freeman Fuel has been in Methuen long enough that its customers measure the relationship in decades — one reviewer this spring said they had been with the company for more than fifty years and would not change. That is the shape of this business: a third-generation family fuel-oil dealer at 5 Lowell St that also runs heating, cooling and plumbing departments, serving the Merrimack Valley and southern New Hampshire. The company says it has been at it for over 63 years; its Better Business Bureau file, which carries an A+ and no complaints, puts the start date at 1953. The work is bread-and-butter mechanical: boilers, gas lines, water heaters, oil deliveries and central air. BuildZoom's permit history bears that out — 25 permitted jobs, mostly Methuen residential boiler replacements, gas-line moves and hot-water work. Reviewers who like them consistently describe fast response, including after-hours calls, and technicians who leave the work area clean. The part to ask about directly is the service policy. Two of the ten accounts on file are one-star, and both turn on the same thing: that the company will service equipment only for customers who keep buying oil from it. One of those accounts also blames the boiler the company installed for damage in the customer's basement and describes the phone call about it going badly. Both are a couple of years old and nothing similar shows up since, but the underlying policy is the kind of thing that decides whether this is the right company for you — especially if you already have an oil supplier or plan to switch. On credentials, the company lists a Massachusetts plumbing licence, a Massachusetts corporate plumbing number and a New Hampshire plumbing licence on its own site, and BuildZoom lists a Massachusetts Plumbing Business licence #3771 as active while explicitly marking it unverified. Treat all of those as claims rather than confirmations. If you want a long-established local supplier to handle both the fuel and the equipment, and you are comfortable buying oil from the company that maintains it, Freeman is a reasonable call. Before signing anything, get the service-eligibility rules in writing — specifically whether repairs and annual tune-ups stay available if you buy oil elsewhere — and ask for the current licence numbers and the warranty terms on any boiler or AC installation.

Freeman Fuel is OUTSTANDING!! Very responsive and extremely professional. I called for a problem with my boiler and they came out right away. The technician that came out diagnosed the problem very quickly and the repairs were done same day. I highly recommend them.
