Haycon is a design/build firm based in Boston's Roxbury neighborhood that specializes in Passive House and high-performance construction, with a client list built largely around midsize multifamily and affordable-housing developments. The company says it was founded about 15 years ago by two Boston architects, Patrick Haydon and David Bemiss. Local news coverage credits Haycon as general contractor on a string of subsidized housing projects across Greater Boston -- a $10.6 million MassHousing-financed development in Chelsea, a 2019 workforce-housing project in Dorchester, 45 affordable homeownership units delivered in Jamaica Plain, and a Market Street project now underway in Lynn slated to finish in 2027. Its Passive House work has picked up recognition too: a Massachusetts Preservation Award, a win at the 2024 Wood in Architecture Awards, and a spot among the winners of the 2025 Phius Passive Projects Design Competition. The customer-facing record is thinner and mixed. Google shows 3.7 stars from 9 ratings; in a November 2025 review, a subcontractor described Haycon as easy to coordinate with across a project's moving parts, and in a 2021 review another customer called it a good fit for projects of any size. But in a May 2025 review, a different customer described the opposite experience on-site -- a foreman with an attitude who spent time on his phone instead of directing the crew, work running about two months behind schedule, and a warning not to hire Haycon for smaller jobs. A federal OSHA inspection recorded since January 2026 found two violations and $11,585 in penalties. Houzz lists a contractor license number for the company, though that's the directory's own record rather than a state-verified one -- worth confirming directly. For a large-scale, Passive-House-oriented multifamily or affordable-housing build, Haycon's project list speaks for itself; for a smaller residential job, the mixed on-site accounts are worth weighing, and it's worth asking about current crew supervision and licensing directly.
“The project is scheduled to be completed by 2027 and is being developed by Boston Real Estate Collaborative (BREC), with Haycon serving as general contractor and Monte French Design Studio (MFDS) as architect.”
“The project was delivered by a multidisciplinary team including H+O Structural Engineering, BLW Engineering Inc., Michael D’Angelo Landscape Architecture, Sherwood Consulting & Design LLC, Haycon Inc., and DVM Housing Partners.”
“The general contractor is Haycon Inc., the architect is The Architectural Team, and the management agent will be Peabody Properties.”
“Haycon Building came on the Massachusetts construction scene”
“The project was conceived in 2019, when developer Haycon was looking for a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable solution to stay within Boston’s height limits for mid-rise construction.”
It's been a pleasure working with Brad and Charlie. They do an excellent job coordinating the many moving parts of a project to ensure everything runs smoothly from start to finish. I and the rest of Rock Splitters, Inc. look forward to working with them on many more successful projects in the future.
Find another construction company! Horrible customer service, foreman talks to you with an attitude and doesn't know his job! The foreman we had on site was very lazy he would sit in his vehicle playing video games on his phone pretending to do work. Meanwhile, his staff was all over the place not knowing what to do! Bad time management, work should have been completed 2 months ago. Don't use them for simple projects out of the question!
Great company to work with. Would recommend for any size project!
