HomeWorks Energy is the Stoughton company most likely to knock on your door offering a free Mass Save home energy assessment — and the one Massachusetts Redditors most often warn each other about. Founded, by its own account, in Scott Veggeberg's garage in 2008 and run by Max Veggeberg since 2013, it does the assessments, insulation and air sealing, and heat pump and HVAC work that flow from the Mass Save program. Its Massachusetts HVAC licence is active on the state registry, and the website lists plumbing, electrical and sheet-metal licence numbers of its own. The insulation crews get the good reviews. Google shows 4.2 stars from 19 ratings, and the five-star write-ups from late 2025 and 2026 name the crews — Rafael's team insulating a house with extra care and finding discounts, Cranberry and Stephen, Jeff and crew cleaning up well. The complaints are about the bigger installs. In June 2026, a Google reviewer who had a heat pump, water heater and insulation done listed a condensate line installed wrong that flooded the basement, a $600 add-on part forgotten until they called it out, and a wrong thermostat that ran the unit around the clock for nearly $1,200 in electric bills. An August 2025 reviewer said their bills rose after switching and that a maintenance call was answered with advice to find an electrician. On Reddit, an April 2026 r/massachusetts thread titled "a mess of a company, don't use them for Mass Save projects" drew a commenter whose house was left damaged and the project unfinished; an August 2026 Melrose commenter said simply not to use them; a December 2025 Medford poster said the techs seemed mystified by their boiler; a 2023 Redditor was shocked by a $48,000 ductless mini-split quote for a 1,300-square-foot house; and a May 2025 complaint site post summed up poor work, poor communication and zero pride. On the other side, an April 2026 Medford Redditor had a pretty good experience getting a heat pump quote, and a 2018 commenter noted that home performance contractors like HomeWorks are aggressive about getting back to you. The unsolicited mail and door-knocking draw their own irritation — a 2023 one-star review was only about the letter, and a 2025 Watertown News letter argued a city-endorsed assessment company should not solicit tenants. A 2022 customer who was satisfied with the insulation crew's work still found the house cold afterward. A reasonable route for the free assessment and the subsidized insulation and air sealing, where the crews earn their praise. For a heat pump or water heater install, get competing quotes, insist on a written scope that names every part and the thermostat model, and ask who handles callbacks when something misbehaves.

This is easily the worst home services company I’ve ever had the misfortune of contracting with. They rescheduled on me three different times, sent two different crews (neither of whom had communicated with each other and both of which arrived without equipment necessary to complete the job), made a mess of my home, didn’t complete the work they were contracted to and then somehow justified charging me even more than the contract I originally agreed to despite completing less work than I agreed to that was of significantly worse quality than expected.
I would advise anyone to AVOID Homeworks Energy at all costs. They do inferior work, have unqualified technicians and do an awful job communicating to get problems resolved. They installed a heat pump, hot water heater, and insulated our home. Here is a list of the things done wrong. Day 1 installed condensation tube wrong and wrong pump. They said it would be fine so we ran the system…….flooded basement Forgot to install a 600$ add on part and only came back when I called them out on it. Installed the wrong thermostat causing the unit to run 24/7 leading to almost 1200$ in electric bills over two months. They did compensate me for some of this after I complained for 3 months and presented them with my electric bills. Patched 30 holes in my walls incorrectly and left a styrofoam plug sticking out of every one. They had to come back and redo the whole project filling my house with dust and mess a second time. When the technician didn’t get the number he wanted on the insulation blower test started closing interior doors to falsify the number so he could move on to the next job. Homeworks employees broke a part of the heat pump TWICE leaving us with no AC in the middle of summer for 4 weeks and another flooded basement. No compensation and no apology. I pay them monthly for a service contract. Failed to repair a broken pump…….flooded basement again which is now moldy. The employees are nice but if you actually want anything done correctly I would look elsewhere.
Unprofessional and disorganized. They will drop you in as instant for an easier buck. Stick to local shops that honor their deals. Took six rounds of phone calls with two different agents to 1) book, and 2) get surprise-canceled only hours before the appointment. I had a call from their agent saying they had a new cluster of requests and would I reschedule? She intimated I lived far away and it made more sense for them to service that other cluster first. Mind you, they had confirmed over the phone, email, and messages by then. I said I preferred to keep my appointment given that I had already moved my own schedule for it, and I got a verbal assurance that my technician would be here. They just called, hours before the appointment, to tell me they canceled it anyway. Absolutely disgraceful.
We had Mike, Jack and Ethan come to our house to install insulation. They did a great job. Knew what to do in a very professional way. They were very respectful in every way. Very timely, cleaned up and polite. I would highly recommend them and Mass Save. I am looking forward to saving money on my heating and AC because of HomeWorks Energy. Thanks again guys!!!
Rafael and his team were professional, worked consistently and thoroughly on insulating my house with extra care. They even found discounts where they could. Highly recommended.
