Two review pages tell different stories about the same Whitman pool company: 31 Google ratings averaging 3.8, and a BuildZoom listing sitting at 1.0 from exactly two reviews. The 30 in-ground pool permits behind them are the part nobody disputes. Jay Jay's Pool Service says Jay Ross started it in 1990, after eight years working in the pool industry for someone else, and describes itself as family owned. Its BBB profile puts incorporation in 2002, six employees, and James J. Ross as president. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, and BBB has accredited the company since 2007 with an A+ grade. What people hire them for is clear from the permit trail: in-ground vinyl-lined pools, typically around $57,750 a job, built across Braintree, Milton, Holbrook, Hanson, Taunton, Marshfield and Pembroke. Around that sits the seasonal work — openings and closings, liner replacement and restoration, filter swaps. The through-line in the positive reviews is speed on the unglamorous emergencies. A homeowner writing in August 2024 had a liner pull out of its track over a weekend, called Monday, and had Kevin and Pat there Tuesday morning. In a July 2023 review, another customer emailed on a Friday evening, had Jay on site the following Tuesday, and a crew replacing a filter and running new pipe two days after that — finished in two hours, water already clear. The last few months look similar: three Google reviews since June 2026, all positive, one from first-time pool owners who had inherited a neglected pool. The other side is specific enough to take seriously. A June 2022 reviewer paid $375 for an opening, said the crew pulled the cover and unplugged a few things, and that the pool was still green two weeks later — and that a return visit to clear it would be a separate charge. On BuildZoom, a 2019 customer described a liner that would not stay seated through half a dozen return visits, ongoing leaks and water loss, and a phone call in which the owner swore and hung up. A 2020 review there described an in-ground install promised for the second week of June and still unbuilt in July, with the deposit refunded two days after it was asked for. Those two accounts are the whole of BuildZoom's 1.0 average, which is why Google's 3.8 across 31 ratings is the number with real weight in it — a decent middle, not a glowing one. The right call for a South Shore homeowner who wants an in-ground pool built, or a liner problem solved by a crew that has done it for decades. Before booking a seasonal opening, pin down in writing what it includes, what the water should look like when they leave, and what a return visit costs if it isn't right.
