Verified record
JMC Associates is a Wellesley home inspection firm with unusual staying power — BBB records show it's been operating since 1984, more than four decades, run out of a small team led by Jim McDermott alongside Steve Hussey, Peter Veile and Joe McDermott. The written record here is short but split. In a 2026 review, a first-time buyer describes inspector Steve walking them through every detail of the house and sending them off with maintenance tips and an open invitation to call with questions later. Back in a 2021 review, a repeat source named Jim, Joe and Ben directly, calling them accommodating on scheduling and "truthful, straight-shooters" rather than alarmist. But two other reviews describe the opposite of what a home inspection is supposed to catch. In a December 2022 review, a customer says the inspector missed issues in the basement that cost thousands of dollars to fix afterward. And in a February 2022 review, a buyer whose inspection was arranged through Sotheby's says JMC failed to flag illegal and potentially dangerous plumbing the sellers had done — serious enough that, after the sale closed, five separate licensed plumbers independently told them the home should never have passed inspection as-is. That's the tension worth sitting with: a long-tenured, BBB A+-rated firm whose accessible written reviews split between customers who felt well cared for and customers whose inspection missed exactly the kind of defect an inspection exists to catch. The company's own site lists a Massachusetts Home Inspector license (#386), a General Contractor license, and Home Improvement Contractor registration, plus InterNACHI membership — none of which have been independently verified against a state registry here. If you're weighing JMC, it's worth asking directly which inspector will be on-site and pressing for specifics on how thoroughly plumbing and structural elements get checked, especially in a home with any renovation history.

Steve did our home inspection as first time home buyers. He did a very thorough inspection. He took his time to check out every detail of the house and explain to us what he saw. He also gave us general care and maintenance tips, which was super helpful as first time home buyers. He even gave us his card and said to call him anytime after we move in if we have any maintenance questions.
Do not use this inspector. Missed issues in basement which cost many thousands to fix.
JMC was chosen for us by Sotheby’s for our home inspection. They gave us great tips overall but failed to inform us about all the illegal and potentially dangerous plumbing done by the sellers. After purchasing our home, we called a licensed plumber to come replace some of the copper piping in the basement. However, he quickly came to the conclusion that this home should have never passed inspection as-is. Since then, we’ve had five other licensed plumbers come over and tell us the exact same thing. Unfortunately for us, there’s so much work needing to be done that 5/6 of the plumbers refused to commit to the work and the 6th one is asking for $15,000. JMC sent over their supervisor for a second opinion and he backed up their original claim that they’re “not plumbers” and that they “don’t see anything wrong here”. However, the sinks and washer are not vented, the wrong size PVC was used and it was manually heated and bent at an angle, the sink plumbing has multiple 90° elbows in it and it’s being routed straight into the bathtub, the sewer pipe is corroding and bubbling on the outside, the bathtub has the wrong trap, etc. All of this was easily visible from the basement. We’re very disappointed and do not recommend getting a home inspection unless you’re planning on also getting a plumber to inspect it afterwards.
The best home inspectors in Massachusetts. Jim the owner is wonderful. As well as his brother Joe & Ben, who serves Cape Cod and beyond. I've only worked with these 3 but almost always able to accommodate any inspection time slot. Answer questions during and after inspections, if clients have follow up. Truthful, straight-shooters at JMC, without excessively scaring clients. As a realtor, I wholeheartedly trust JMC Associates and always recommend them to clients. Thanks guys!
