BuildZoom's own scoring puts them at 92, which it says lands in the top third of Massachusetts licensed contractors. The company says it started in 1996, when Damon Kendall and Ronald Welch — who met framing and finishing houses on the Cape — went into business together, and that Charles Tardanico's East Bay Builders merged in during 2007. The three run it as equal partners and put their tenure at 30 years. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration is active, verified against the state registry under the company's own name. Its BBB page is an A+, with six employees listed and no complaints published. Architects and landscape architects working Cape waterfront projects keep naming them as builder. A Catalano Architects post this June credits Kendall & Welch on an Osterville residence looking out over West Bay, and Dan Gordon Landscape Architects listed them as a collaborator on the Bay View project that took a Luxe RED award for landscape architecture in June 2025. That is credit from the design side, not from homeowners. Homeowner voice is the thin part. Google shows 4★ across five ratings, and the single review carrying any text isn't from a client: in November 2025 a neighbor living across from a Kendall & Welch build wrote that crews had spent a year turning trucks around in their circular driveway despite repeated calls. A Yahoo listing carries a customer describing the crew as reliable and disciplined about holding to the agreed scope. BBB, Houzz and BuildZoom show no reviews at all. For a large Cape build or renovation, a firm with this permit trail and a live state registration is a reasonable place to start. Ask for references from recent jobs, since the review pages carry almost nothing — and if your lot is tight or your neighbors are close, settle site access and truck parking before the first delivery.
