McKinnon Painting & Carpentry gets called in as often to rescue a stalled project as to start one from scratch. One recent client brought Jeff on after growing frustrated with a different general contractor mid-renovation on a third-floor buildout; he stepped in, kept them looped in on progress, and worked from their vision while still offering his own ideas. The company is run by Jeff McKinnon, who says he came up learning carpentry from his father before starting the business on his own, and it's built its Boston-area reputation on custom shelving, deck repair, door and window carpentry, room additions, and painting — its own listings also point to kitchen and bath remodeling work. The numbers back up the reputation: 64 Google ratings average 4.8, the Better Business Bureau has it at an A+ grade, and it's listed as a member of the Boston Chamber of Commerce. In the six months since January, six reviews have come in and none were negative — customers praised a custom storage build that fit perfectly and finished on time, a deck refinish that came out solid once the crew smoothed over some initially rough boards, and a door-and-window repair that finally killed long-standing drafts. Across the longer history — reviews stretch back to 2021 across five different sources — the throughline holds: Jeff listens first, then delivers close to what people pictured. Worth asking about upfront: that deck job started rough before it was corrected, so if your project involves reworking existing materials, get a sense of how they handle surprises mid-job. The business hasn't pursued BBB accreditation, which is common for a shop this size but still worth noting. McKinnon reads as a solid call for carpentry-driven work — additions, built-ins, deck and trim repair, painting — and for stepping in when a renovation with another contractor has gone sideways. Since the company's own material also touts kitchen and bath remodeling, ask directly whether that means coordinating a full room renovation or the carpentry and finish work adjacent to it, and confirm current insurance and licensing before signing.

I couldn’t be happier with the work they did! everything was completed with exceptional attention to detail and craftsmanship. The team was professional, punctual, and kept the workspace clean throughout the entire project. The final result exceeded my expectations, and I would absolutely recommend their services to anyone looking for high-quality work.

We needed custom shelving and some woodwork for extra storage, and the team did a great job. They listened to what we wanted, gave helpful suggestions, and made everything fit perfectly. The work was clean, professional, and finished on time. Very happy with the results and would gladly use them again.

Jeff was recommended through a community network when we were having challenges with a different GC for a home renovation project (finishing third level) and considering replacing the prior GC. Jeff stepped in to take over from the prior contractor, and from the moment he was engaged, Jeff was communicative and helpful, keeping us in the loop on progress and scheduling. Jeff listened to understand our vision and intention for the space, but was also not afraid to offer suggestions from his own experience to help achieve the best outcome. With our whole family, including two young children, living in the home while the project was ongoing, Jeff, Rob, and the rest of the team were conscientious of our space, cleaning up every day and coordinating with us for the more disruptive portions of the work. Overall, Jeff did everything in his power to make an awkward transition as smooth as possible and left us feeling like we had a collaborator and partner for our project; we are glad we transitioned to him to finish out the project, and we will certainly look his way for any future projects in our home.
