MKJ Construction is a Derry, New Hampshire, lead paint removal and de-leading specialist, run by John Vaillancourt as a family business the Better Business Bureau's file traces back to 1992. It isn't BBB-rated (the bureau says it lacks enough information to grade it), but its written record across other platforms is unusually deep for a one-trade specialist: 17 reviews dated from 2011 to 2024, all but one at five stars, feeding a 4.9-star average on both Angi and HomeAdvisor. The reviews describe a company that made a stressful process — de-leading a home, often on a deadline tied to a baby or young child moving in — manageable. In reviews from the 2010s, customers repeatedly named John directly, describing him as responsive, honest, and consistently the lowest or among the lowest bidders of several firms they'd called; several accounts describe passing lead re-inspection on the first attempt and John doing small extra fixes at no charge. In a 2024-07-31 review, a family said Johnny and Darren supported them through a long de-leading project to make their home safe for their son, calling the finished work "beautiful." A 2024-01-01 review said MKJ went "above and beyond" helping resolve a failed building inspection caused by a code mix-up. One account, from December 2015, is the exception: the crew broke a water pipe on a Friday afternoon (a $350 repair) and tore apart clothes-dryer duct work during the job — the reviewer still rated the company four stars and said they'd otherwise have given straight A's. A couple of things are worth checking directly before hiring: HomeAdvisor's own profile states both "over 20 years" family owned and, separately, "32 years of experience" on the same page — the two don't match each other or the company's roughly 34-year Better Business Bureau history — and the website on file for this listing differs from the live site named on the company's Angi and HomeAdvisor profiles, so it's worth confirming you're reaching its current site. MKJ also lists window and door replacement alongside its core lead-abatement work, and its HomeAdvisor and Angi profiles describe it as certified and licensed, though neither names a specific license number.
Johnny and Darren are WONDERFUL! We went through a long journey trying to get our house deleaded to make safe for our son and they were so supportive along the way. The final product is beautiful and best of all our house feels safe, we couldn't recommend them enough!
MKJ were professional, timely, and a pleasure to work with. Although our initial building inspection failed (due to a confusion between building codes), MKJ went above and beyond in assisting us with remediating the issue to ensure we passed.
MKJ was efficient, courteous, and Priced well under what other providers quoted. They were great to work with.
Job was done quickly and for a reasonable price.
It all went wonderfully. We'd been lead to think that releasing would be horrible, but MKJ made it painless. They got everything done on time (tenants were expecting a baby) and passed re-inspection on first attempt. Extremely honest guy; saved us money in ways we wouldn't have thought of without compromising on outcome. Tenants are very happy with the new windows, too! Not as much communication as my husband is used to (e.g. no blow by blow updates) and not a particularly "slick" operation, but good solid trustworthy work for a very reasonable price. Glad we'll never have to delead again, but if we did it would be with MKJ!
