Payne | Bouchier Fine Builders is a Boston firm built around historic renovation and high-end custom work — the kind of project that involves a historic district commission hearing, not just a contractor's estimate. Founded in 1981 by Steve Payne, Tom Payne and Oliver Bouchier, the company says it pools millwork and cabinetry, design and British craftsmanship backgrounds, and its own site describes recreating historically accurate window sash profiles and exotic veneer work for Back Bay, Beacon Hill and South End homes. The written record is worth reading carefully, though: of the three reviews on Houzz, none come from homeowners. Two are from architecture firms that partnered with Payne Bouchier on client projects, and the third is from a metal-staircase fabricator who supplied a custom cable-railing staircase the firm installed alongside its own in-house millwork — the fabricator called the installation and finish work well done. A 2024 Google review mentioning "our top choice for larger projects" and praising custom cabinetry and furniture builds reads more like a professional collaborator's endorsement than a one-off client's, going by how the rest of this firm's review history runs. None of this means the work described is unreliable — an architect and a fabricator who've watched craftsmanship up close are informed judges — but the praise on record so far comes from people who worked alongside the firm professionally, and the newest of the three Houzz reviews dates to March 2016. This fits a homeowner planning a serious historic-home renovation or restoration in the Boston area who values in-house millwork and craftsmanship-first work — just go in knowing the reviews above reflect trade-partner experience, not yet a homeowner client's own account.

We worked with Ann. Payne provided professional service with an accurate budget estimate of the project. They are our top choice for larger projects. We are happy with all of their work which included custom cabinetry and furniture builds.
Working with Payne/Bouchier is always an enjoyable experience because of their talented and knowledgeable staff! Their project approach fits perfectly with our view that the client, builder, and designer are all part of a team, collaborating to get the best possible result. Any challenges generated by the physical structure of the home were quickly overcome, the result of strong project management practices and the skilled craftsman at Payne Bouchier. Contextual design is important to us, and so we appreciated their level of understanding and commitment when balancing the need to honor the history of the home with the requirements of modern living. We would not hesitate to recommend Payne/Bouchier and we always look forward to working with them.
We had an opportunity to work with Payne Bouchier on a remodeling project of theirs in the Boston area. They were easy to work with and have a great eye for detail. We built a custom metal staircase with a cable railing, and Payne-Bouchier did a great job with the installation and provided beautiful custom mill work (which they do in-house).
I worked for Payne Bouchier on a Residence in Duxbury, Massachusetts in 2010 and found the company to be genuine, thoughtful and proactive. Payne Bouchier worked tirelessly to meet the clients deadlines and needs and showed exceptional levels of craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout the project. A great company that does great work.
