Tanks-a-Lot does one thing — it pulls out old residential oil tanks and puts new ones in — and the clock is the whole point. A February 2025 customer had a 275-gallon tank out in under half an hour with no spill and no oil smell. In December 2024, a homeowner whose tank failed in the cold said their own oil company quoted a two-week wait; this crew came the same day. A July 2025 customer watched three men take out the old tank, set the new one and finish in an hour and a half without a drop of oil on the floor. The Everett company trades as a DBA of J.J. Homes & Sons, which its site says has been in the heating oil business since 1939, and is owner-operated by Jay Holmes, the second generation of the family in the trade. Jay turns up in the reviews himself: a May 2025 customer called him on a Monday and had a crew at the house Wednesday morning. Price comes up nearly as often as speed — an April 2024 reviewer, a senior on a fixed income, said the quote beat others by thousands, and a March 2026 Reddit commenter reported being quoted $4,000 for a steel tank removal and replacement. Awkward jobs show up too. In October 2025, Jared, Ken and Derek replaced a leaking 275-gallon tank and also swapped the oil filter, ran more than fifty feet of new oil feed line and installed a lally column to bring the system up to code. At a six-unit Jamaica Plain condo association in May 2026, with five units moving from oil to gas, the old tanks came out — three of them buried in sand with concrete blocks built around them. The complaints are consistent, and they are about the phone and the calendar rather than the tank. Five reviewers between May 2022 and July 2025 describe rude treatment: a driver who swore at a customer in May 2022, a phone manner that an April 2024 reviewer said interrupted and belittled them into texting photos, a crew that arrived uninvited at the wrong address in July 2025 and was short with the homeowner's wife. Three more describe dates that fell apart — a no call, no show in September 2024; an install on a rental property with no heat that never happened in November 2022 after two weeks of confirming; and a January 2023 customer worn down by repeated day-of requests to come by. A July 2025 reviewer who had used them for years said they kept going back because there is not much competition in the field. In a September 2026 Reddit thread, a commenter who used the company for a tank removal and replacement wrote that "the removal of the old tank was a big headache." If your tank is leaking or you need a swap done this week, speed and a clean basement floor are what customers describe over and over, and the BBB grades the company A+.

Absolutely the best oil replacement service around. Customer service was above and beyond! The team that replaced my tank today on Bradford road was AMAZING! Replaced it quickly, updated a few things after replacing my 25+ year old tank, and placed the new tank in a little better position, freeing up more garage space. They stayed after the install to verify everything worked (burner/hot water/etc). The best part was how great they worked together as a team and made the process both enjoyable and informative. Can’t recommend them enough, and hope the installation team gets recognized for being so respectful, knowledgeable, and informative. Thank you so much!! 5 stars for a 5+ star organization!!!
I live in Jamaica plain, Ma and our building is a six unit condo association. Recently 5 of the condos transitioned from oil to gas heat and the tanks here were old, and 3 were buried in sand with concrete blocks build around them. I called Tanks-A-Lot and a distinguished gentleman, (to bad he is happily married), who has been doing this for six decades came out assessed the situation and within one week a crew came out and did the work. Tanks-A-Lot removed 5 old oil tanks and about a truck load of sand and concrete in two days. There are no evidence of the tanks even to the pipes going out side to fill them. All removed and patched! Great Job no hassles very reasonable prices! Excellent Job!
I have been a home builder over 45 years. Built some nice homes over the years and have used many contractors. Without a doubt this was one of my most pleasant experiences. Would highly recommend them if you need this service. Don't bother to shop around. Ron Ferioli
