Aline Architecture Inc. is an Orleans-based architecture, design, interiors, construction, and construction-management firm. Its own site identifies Joy Cuming, AIA and NCARB, as principal architect, and describes work across residential, commercial, public, and private projects; directory profiles list 19 years of experience, LEED/NCARB/AIA credentials, and licenses or registrations reported in several states. Houzz shows 23 projects and services ranging from custom homes and additions to kitchen remodeling, energy-efficient homes, sustainable design, and structural engineering. The written customer history is substantial but dated: 16 reviews run from 2015 through 2025, with the newest accounts describing design-build work, interior-design consultations, site-sensitive planning, and remodeling. Reviewers repeatedly praise creative solutions, careful listening, project management, permitting help, responsiveness, and finished renovations. A 2025 homeowner described design-build work that met difficult lot constraints and finished on time and within budget; another 2025 reviewer praised fabric and design help for a smaller re-upholstery project. Older accounts describe kitchen and bathroom remodeling, additions, whole-home renovations, and a gut renovation and expansion in Orleans. There is also a clear counterexample to weigh: a 2023 Google review says the customer never received plans and walked away after four months with no communication. Costs are another issue raised in a 2016 review, which praised the results but said expenses sometimes felt out of control; the same reviewer said Aline worked on more economical options. Before booking, confirm the proposed scope, communication cadence, budget controls, and the specific license or registration needed for the project. Aline looks best suited to homeowners seeking integrated architectural design and remodeling management, particularly projects where site constraints, sustainability, and detailed design matter.
The design build project with Aline was five star work Two aspects of the project deserve special mention. The first was the impressive architectural design, that skillfully overcame the site constraints particularly lot size and yielded a layout that included my priority requirements and more. Equally as important was a very effective working relationship with the construction manager who consistently kept me informed and instilled complete confidence that my best interests and complete satisfaction were her priority…and the project was done on time and within budget.
I had to write and express my thanks and pleasure at working with the interior design folks at Aline Architecture. I saw the beautiful homes on the website and was a little intimidated as I was not looking for that huge a project, in fact I just needed some design ideas for an re-upholstery project. I needed fabric and design ideas and help. I really thought my project was too small, but Aline was welcoming, professional and was really fun to work together. I don't live nearby which was fine as phone, email or Zoom meet up was great. Batted around ideas, got fabric samples in the mail - designs I never would have come up with on my own and just endlessly searching on the internet. They guided me through - professional, caring, listening to what I wanted. The result was not only the design a great fit in my home, but I felt I was a great fit with the staff and expertise at Aline. Thanks so much. Jeff, Hudson Valley, NY
This review is for Aline’s design process. If you’re looking for someone to build you a home, you have lots of choices. If you’re looking for someone who’s interested in building a relationship—and a home—there’s Aline. Before a single nail was hammered, Joy and her team spent months with us talking about our lifestyle and passions—nature…books…fireplaces…family. When we were thinking of buying land and building on it, they walked numerous sites with us, offering their opinions on what would work and what wouldn’t. And when we finally decided to look for a home and renovate it, Joy (and her dog!) came to open houses with us, providing valuable input on the spot. By building a relationship with us first, Aline produced design plans that ARE us—and then some. Now that the design has been finalized, Aline is ready to begin the actual renovation of our home in Wellfleet. I’ll let you know how that goes, but if it’s anything like the design process, we’re in great hands.
Working with Aline has been an amazing experience. We had a nondescript center-hall colonial box of a house, with minimal light and zero charm. Aline has transformed it into a bright, spacious, and inviting space, all in keeping with our vision of optimal use and our aesthetic preferences. Inside and out, the house is unique and interesting and incredibly practical. Changes have included converting a small bedroom into a walk-in closet, converting a small living room into a den/first-floor bedroom, converting a kitchen and dining room into a much larger kitchen with a center island and a pantry, converting a family room into a dining room, adding a new center entryway, and converting the garage into a 500-square-foot great room that is flooded with light all day long. Apart from just being a lovely person, Joy Cumings has been sensitive to our taste, as well as our budget, breaking the transformation up into five independent phases, each of which created a nice, livable version of the house pending the next step. I could not possibly recommend Aline’s architectural services more confidently or more enthusiastically.
Never got plans and zero communication after 4 months we walked away
