JANEY builds at a scale most homeowners never touch. In 2024 it broke ground on Harvard's Enterprise Research Campus lab buildings in Allston as a joint venture partner with Turner Construction and J&J Contractors; in 2022 it teamed with Shawmut Design and Construction to win Harvard Business School's Cash House renovation; in 2015 the City of Boston picked it alongside Gilbane for the Dearborn STEM Academy in Roxbury. The company says Greg Janey founded it in Roxbury in 1984 with his two cousins, and that it now runs construction management, general contracting and owner's representation out of offices in Boston, Cape Cod and Washington D.C. A 2018 Banker & Tradesman profile puts the start of the construction company in 1990 from a Dorchester storefront, with one of its first notable jobs a 20,000-square-foot office for the Urban League of Eastern Massachusetts in Dudley Square. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, #154864, is active on the state registry, and Gregory Janey was named to the Boston Fed's New England Advisory Council in 2019 alongside the heads of King Arthur Flour and L.L. Bean. The thing to raise before hiring: the federal Violation Tracker database records a Labor Department Wage and Hour Division action against Janey Construction Management & Consulting dated February 16, 2019 — a wage and hour violation under the Davis-Bacon Act, civil, with a $44,630 penalty, at the company's Huntington Avenue address. That is a prevailing-wage matter on public work rather than a homeowner complaint, and it is seven years old, but it is a real federal agency action and worth asking about if you are hiring them on a publicly funded job. Direct customer voice is almost nonexistent: five Google ratings averaging five stars with two short written notes, one in March 2025 calling the work "great quality and craftsmanship affordable trustworthy and great communication," and one in 2024 praising the people "from the top down." Houzz carries the profile with no reviews at all. Read the fit honestly. This is a construction manager and owner's representative for institutional and large commercial projects; the residential work in its history is decades old. If you are a developer, an institution or a public owner in Greater Boston, it is an established, credentialed firm with major joint-venture partners. If you are a homeowner planning a kitchen, this is not the shop scaled for it — and there is no recent residential track record here to judge.
“Turner Construction Company, alongside joint venture partners Janey Construction Management and J&J Contractors, celebrated the groundbreaking of Harvard Univer”
“Two larger firms with whom the School had well-established relationships and two smaller minority-owned local businesses were invited to bid. Unbeknownst to the team, two of those companies, Shawmut Design and Construction and Janey Construction Management, had been seeking an opportunity to work together, and approached Memmott and O’Brien to ask if they could submit a joint proposal—which ended up being the winning bid.”
“Greg Janey, president of Boston-based Janey Construction Management, told GBH News that the federal law puts too much emphasis on the annual revenues of contractors and not enough on their race and ethnicity in determining which companies should get a leg up on contracts. ... “The language needs to be more detailed about what portion of those funds will be allocated towards minority businesses and not necessarily a small business,” said Janey, who is Black.”
