On Cape Kitchens is a kitchen and bathroom remodeling company run out of a North Eastham showroom by owner/designer Vern Hatt, who the state registry confirms as an active Home Improvement Contractor license holder. The business's own site says it has served Cape Cod since 1990, working from Eastham through Wellfleet, Truro, Provincetown, Orleans, Brewster, Harwich and Chatham, and describes Hatt as a Massachusetts licensed and insured builder with over 30 years in the trade. That license checks out: state registry records show Home Improvement Contractor license #177590 active and held by Vern A. Hatt, matching the name on the business's own site. The company also lists a Construction Supervisor license, #CS62739, by its own account, though that particular number is self-reported rather than registry-verified. Customer feedback is thin but positive. In a 2021 Google review, a homeowner called the owner "a seasoned professional with boatloads of top shelf work," describing the operation as "first class" and "easy to deal with" -- the only written account currently on file. On Cape Kitchens also has profiles on Houzz, showing two projects and a Houzz Badge but no reviews yet, and on Angi, also with no reviews yet, so there isn't a broader track record to draw on beyond that one comment and the verified license. Worth asking about before booking: the company's own materials aren't consistent on how long it's been around -- its site says "Since 1990," its Houzz profile's area-served text says "since 1980," and its Angi profile states "14 years of experience" -- so it's worth confirming tenure directly. With only one dated review to go on, it's also worth asking for recent references or photos of finished work. On Cape Kitchens is a reasonable call for a homeowner on the Lower or Outer Cape who wants a kitchen or bathroom remodel from a state-licensed local shop, but the thin, older review record means it's worth verifying current capacity and recent work directly before booking.
The proprietor is well a seasoned professional with boatloads of top shelf work. Easy to deal with. The operation is first class. Highly recommended.
We did a gut first floor reno of our Wellfleet home this past winter, which included demolition of a powder room, flooring throughout much of house, completely new kitchen, additional windows, & expanding a screened-in deck. It required a bit of engineering due to the demo of the bathroom, which required posts and beams to replace it. We feared a project that had us so far away the entire time. Wasted fears. Vern delivered a beautiful house to us, completely transformed. He sent us updates with photos weekly. Every week. He listened to some things we wanted changed, and was responsive. Our house has exceeded our expectations. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire Vern, and in fact he will be doing some smaller projects for us this winter. He really made the process easy.
Never consider this builder. He built our house in 2007-2008. We have many problems, we have spent thousands to fix his mistakes. Other building professionals refer to him as 'looking for the next victim'. He didnt pay his sub-contractor, now I have a lien on my property. He is being evasive in small claims court.
