On Cape Kitchens is a kitchen-and-bathroom remodeling business run out of North Eastham by owner/designer Vern Hatt, who holds an active Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration verified with the state, alongside a self-reported construction supervisor license. The company sells cabinets and countertops and handles design and full renovation work for the Lower and Outer Cape, and Hatt is also connected to a related design-build practice, Appropriate Home Design, working from the same address and phone number with a broader scope — additions, ADUs, whole-house makeovers. Exactly how long Hatt has been operating on Cape Cod is unclear: the company's own site says 'since 1990,' its Houzz profile for the same business says 'since 1980,' Angi lists '14 years of experience,' and the related design-build site claims 'over 40 years' — four different answers to the same question. The written history is thin and split between two very different accounts. A 2020 review described a full first-floor gut renovation of a Wellfleet home — demoing a powder room, redoing flooring, building a new kitchen, adding windows, and expanding a screened deck — and a 2021 review called the proprietor a seasoned, easy-to-deal-with professional running a first-class operation. But a 2013 review, describing a house Hatt built in 2007-2008, told a very different story: years of problems the homeowner says cost thousands to fix, and a lien placed on their property after Hatt allegedly didn't pay a subcontractor. That complaint is old and about a different kind of project — a full house build rather than the kitchen and bath work the business is known for today — but it's serious enough, and specific enough, to be worth asking about directly: how payment to subcontractors is handled, and for references from more recent, comparable kitchen or bath jobs.
