The most telling reviews here are not from homeowners. A structural engineer who works with dozens of contractors wrote in May 2017 that this was the firm he chose to renovate his own house. A HERS rater who had inspected the work of hundreds of builders called them, in August 2018, one of the best in Greater Boston for single-family projects. People who see the framing know things a finished photograph cannot show. SaltsmanBrenzel is a South End design-build studio — architects, contractors, interior designers and a working cabinet shop under one roof at 535 Albany Street, where Tom Saltsman and Jason Brenzel moved the firm in 2010. They were building around Boston through the 1990s, incorporated in 2001, and put the practice at 27 years. Its Massachusetts home improvement contractor registration, 132847, is active in the state registry under Saltsman Brenzel Design Construction, Inc. Boston Magazine named it Best of Boston Home for Custom Home Design/Build in 2018, and the firm also lists a 2023 Prism Awards gold. The work sits at the top of the market: Houzz puts a typical job between $400,000 and $4 million, across 13 galleries in Boston, Marblehead, Swampscott, Belmont and Newton. A 2017 client described two gut-and-rehab projects in a historic district and singled out the firm's experience with historic commissions. Another, writing in 2016, had them build a 100-square-foot playroom off a fifty-year-old ranch and then, a decade later, knock the ranch down and build a 5,000-square-foot colonial off that same playroom. The thing to weigh is how little is written down. Eight reviews, all five stars, running August 2012 to August 2018, and nothing since — a shop doing a handful of million-dollar projects a year simply generates few of them, but it means you would be hiring on reputation and awards rather than a current stream of client accounts. Ask for two references from jobs finished in the last two years. And get the estimate structure in writing: a 2017 client praised them specifically for not undercutting a bid and surprising the client at the end, which is exactly the promise worth pinning down. For a whole-house renovation in a historic district, a custom house, or an addition where the drawings and the millwork matter as much as the framing, this is a firm to shortlist.
“The haunting Halloween decorations created by Tom Saltsman, a CalArts and Harvard GSD graduate and the Principal of Boston-based firm SaltsmanBrenzel, are taking the spotlight once again in the architect's own driveway.”
As an Energy Efficiency Consultant and a HERS Rater, I have worked with Tom and his group for many years and inspected many of their projects. We have worked with hundreds of Builders, Architects, and Developers for nearly a decade now. I can easily say that Saltsman Brenzel, Inc. is one of the best ones in the Greater Boston Area, especially for single-family home projects, and I strongly recommend them! The team at Saltsman Brenzel have been an absolutely pleasure to work with. Our relationship on this projected started with the inspection of a home we were considering buying and renovating. Our project was a gut to the framing and a redesign of the layout and flow of the house. Their ability to maintain the historical features of the home while creating a space for modern living was amazing.
As a Structural Engineer I work with dozens of contractors. The SBI crew is skilled, responsive and easy to work with. Tom is about the best designer I've worked with. This is why I chose SBI to renovate my own home.
Saltsman Brenzel exemplifies high quality design and craftsmanship. They designed a custom home addition to perfectly compliment my first period home. Their crew is made up of professionals that care about every detail. I would recommend them for high quality work that will last a lifetime.
We used Saltsman Brenzel for two gut and rehab projects. Both in the historic district. Their craftsmanship, design sense, and customer service is beyond compare. Having a design/build team in one shop is highly preferable and the two partners have a synergy that makes the project run smoothly. They also have immense experience with historic commissions which is critical with certain projects. In addition, they are always on call both during the project and after should something arise.
