Thompson & Crowley Masonry says it's been fixing Massachusetts foundations since 1965 and is now run by the third generation of the same family — stone foundation repair, restoration, and basement waterproofing across the North Shore and Metro West. The reviews keep circling back to one thing: getting old, difficult foundations right rather than taking the easy sell. One first-time homebuyer described the crew walking her through what a 115-year-old house's foundation actually needed, in contrast to other contractors who she felt were trying to scare her into a bigger, pricier job. Another homeowner, working from an independent structural engineer's report on a 1901 triple-decker, wrote that Thompson & Crowley was the only contractor willing to do exactly what the engineer specified — lime mortar and breathable membranes — while other "waterproofing" quotes went a different direction. On turnaround, reviewers describe estimates within minutes of a visit and jobs finished in a single day versus a week quoted elsewhere; the work described ranges from repointing century-old fieldstone to brick stair rebuilds and driveway pavers. Not every job fits their model: in a 2026 review, a homeowner who wanted a smaller, partial-basement job (about $3,500) said the crew mentioned they're used to doing whole basements or bigger projects and might not send a proposal for something that size — worth asking upfront if your job is on the smaller side. For an old stone or fieldstone foundation that needs fixing to spec rather than patching, this is squarely their lane. For a small, contained repair, it's worth confirming they're the right fit before waiting on an estimate.
It was an absolute pleasure to work with Scott and his team on restoring my lime mortar fieldstone foundation. Being first time home buyers purchasing a 115 year old house is a difficult thing to manage. The sellers assured us no issues with moisture in the basement but of course we learned the hard way once the snow started melting. Scott showed up and helped us understand what really needed to be done, compared to other contractors who assumed they could scare us into having it “done right” for a significantly larger quantity of money. The team was professional, cleaned up after themselves, and did a fantastic job. I highly recommend them to anyone needing a true expert on historic foundation restoration. Check out the before and after pics!
Highly recommend this contractor. Scott and team are transparent, on time, and do everything in the work contract. We bought a 1901 constructed triple decker. We had a structural engineer come out and assess the foundation. He gave specific recommendations of the type of mortar and work that is appropriate for this type of house. Thompson & Crowley was the only contractor that proposed doing exactly what the structural engineer suggested - using lime mortar, breathable membranes. The other "waterproofing" quotes we got were extremely out of line with what the structural engineer suggested - they wanted to use mortar that was stronger than the stone (i.e. that could break the stone) and use a rubber membrane that would trap water in the mortar vs letting it breath. If you have an older home, a historic mason is the right way to fix your foundation. Thompson & Crowley are historic masons and are great to work with.
These guys did great work for me a few years ago now. They were prompt clean and affordable. The reason I’m posting now is that I lost my records of the work done. I enailed and they replied immediately. I should have written this two years ago. Great company.
I found them on FB ad and reached out for an estimate during Memorial day weekend. Scott arrived on time and gave me a ballpark estimate on work I wanted done in my partially finished basement (about $3500). He mentioned that they are used to doing the whole basement or bigger jobs so they may not make a proposal. I found that a wierd business practice. Although I was planning on redoing my stairs also, I did not mention that to him because I wanted to see what the next step was. Scott told me he was going to give the office the information he gathered and took my email and said they would get back to me whether or not they are willing to offer a proposal. I got my basement and stairs done with another local masonry company about $6k later and still haven't heard back from Thompson & Crowley. I guess some job are too little.
I recently had masonry work done in the basement of my 130-year-old Victorian home, and I couldn’t be more impressed with the results! From the start, Scott took the time to thoroughly assess the condition of the foundation inside and out and explained the process in a clear, honest manner. He understood the unique challenges that come with an older home, including uneven stonework and aging mortar, and approached everything with precision and craftsmanship. Scott and his team were professional, punctual, and kept the workspace surprisingly clean throughout the project. Most importantly, I now feel confident that my basement is structurally sound and well-protected for years to come! Thanks guys😊
